Getting a horse comfortable with hacking alone?

Thanks for all the tips. I do find it easier to keep her mind focused when we're going forward in trot so do use that if we seem to be in a silly mood whilst out and about. I have an update tho. Yesterday morning when I took her out in hand, I turned left out the farm gate towards lanes...

Getting a horse comfortable with hacking alone?

That's interesting about the magnesium oxide. She hasn't been in season yet this year, so I don't think it's that. She seems to have got worse in the last week to ten days really, I suppose. This morning I took her out of the farm in hand and it was a struggle. She was still stopping and...

Getting a horse comfortable with hacking alone?

Thanks very much for the replies everyone. Yes we do wear high viz and a body protector ;) It might be a good idea to do some groundwork to re-establish myself as leader, as we haven't done any for a while so I'll give that a stab over the weekend and I'll lead her out afterwards too...

Getting a horse comfortable with hacking alone?

We go on circular routes and there and back routes too. Today, we did a there and back route. She was reluctant to go towards the farm gate on the way out but was walking forward once we got through it. She was still looking nervily round sides of houses we passed and we had the snorting past...

Getting a horse comfortable with hacking alone?

Hi My horse and I are a relatively new partnership of five months. I bought her to use as a happy hacker and that is allegedly what she did in her previous home with her previous owner. She is ten years old and seems to have done a bit of everything. We have been going out hacking with...

    I officially hate Robinsons.

Which Robinsons is it though, because there's a co.uk and a .com and I'm never sure which one people are referring to on here, or if one is a rip off of the other? (PS You are using the small claims court aren't you? Cheap, no solicitors required, everyone just turns up and says their piece...

Anyone else feel that Spring is still a Long way off?

Fed up with it now. Like a previous poster, I too bought my horse in Autumn and don't feel I've been able to get into a routine of riding since! My mare must think she's with me to put her hooves up and take it easy, in semi retirement! (Wrong :p) I have managed to ride quite a lot in the...

What's the difference between freezemarking horses and cows?

Hi Yes, one of the benefits is supposed to be that the horse is registered to it's owner through it's freezemark, but frankly I'm not too bothered about that. I'll be happy if my horse just has her own freezemark on to deter any thieves (assuming I can find someone to freezemark her! :p )

Anyone elses saddle give them a sore daisy??

I've had this issue lately and have tried a fleece seatsaver, changing to a smaller saddle (fits me and the horse better but still leads to a sore area) and Equetech soft seat granny knickers. The granny knickers do not have a 'soft seat' but padding that is like a flat piece of card board...

What's the difference between freezemarking horses and cows?

Hello Any horseowning dairy farmers out there? I'd like to get my horse freezemarked but live in a very rural area and so the 2 horse freezemarking companies in the UK are unwilling to visit me unless I can get a large group of horse owners together who all want their horses freezemarked...

Dummy's guide to electric fencing wanted please!

Hi Now the spring grass is coming through, I want to split my horse's field. The livery owner has put in sufficient plastic sticks to split the field in half, and a single row of electric tape across the top of the sticks. I have to supply my own battery. Do I need an energiser too and...

How to stop getting nervous before lessons?

I also get nervous before a lesson which is weird, considering how much I enjoy them and get out of them. I remind myself of how many lessons I have survived already, and bearing this in mind, it's a bit silly for me to be nervous :p

    Laminitis - the warning signs?

What is track grazing? Is it a system of electric fencing that goes round in a kind of pathway? If so, how wide / long do you make the track? OMG breathing heavily is a warning sign? I thought just yesterday "why is my mare huffing and puffing when we've hardly done anything?" :eek...

    Annual lami warning

OMG  This thread has really given me a kick up the backside! My girl is a good doer and coming out of winter far too fat. My hacking confidence is totally shot, so she has had hardly any exercise recently. But I can't let her suffer from laminitis so we will start an exercise...
