How do you afford your horses?

I think it depends on how you keep your horses as well. You can go very cheap/low maintenance or very posh with all the whistles and bells and the money difference is huge! Here in Australia you can keep a horse very cheaply. A basic paddock with no facilities can be rented for as little as...

    Genuine Sharing/Exercising Query

I have just recently started a sharing arrangement with my neighbour who has started riding one of my horses 2 days a week. For me it was a time thing. It becomes hard to keep horses in full work in winter (I'm in Australia) and having someone put in a few extra rides a week on the horse will...

Keeping horses at home - obvious & hidden costs

We're on ten acres. Here are my tips FWIW: If you're going to subdivide the 4 acres into smaller paddocks start off with electric tape before you put the permanent fencing in. That way you can get an idea of whether your field setup works and you can change things around before you invest...

Those of you who ride other people's horses

I am just about to enter into a sharing agreement with my neighbour who is inbetween horses at the moment. She will ride my WB mare 2-3 times a week. I consider her a more proficient rider than me, so any suggestions she has in relation to the way the horse is ridden, including tack...

Headshaking supplements - do they work?

I feel for you - head-shaking is such a nightmare to get to the bottom of and each horse has different triggers. Here's my experience FWIW: My foal was badly head-shaking this last spring (I'm in Australia) and in consultation with the vet we discovered the following: In spring breeding...

    Pony left in a garden

Oh my goodness, what a sad situation. I think having a reasonable means of destroying large animals is a must. In Australia only one or two states allow the processing of horses for human consumption and most of it gets exported overseas. In my state horse meat is pet food only. As far as I'm...

    Pony left in a garden

Whaaat!? Do people seriously dump horses in the UK? Can't they just get them put down or have them slaughtered? Here in Australia you can ring the slaughter house man and he'll come and shoot the horse on the property and take the carcass away for about $50. Or the local hunt clubs will pick...

Care of feathers in wet weather

We can't really move the trough because it's piped in underground. But I think I'll at least put some sort of gravel or boards down in the boggy spots. And actually they're already starting to dry up a fair bit. The wound looks better too.

Care of feathers in wet weather

Thanks. I Googled pig oil and found a saddlery in Australia that stocks it - I'll give it a try. I don't think it's bites of any sort. It's mainly just that his legs are wet a lot of the time. I do have the option to bring him in at night, so that might help as well.

If you buy/breed a foal what do you do for company?

I acquired a pregnant mare in a sort of rescue situation last year. When the foal was born he and the dam shared a fenceline with my middle-aged mare and gelding until the foal was about 3 months old and then he and the dam got put in with the other two. We gave him toys to play with (a...

Care of feathers in wet weather

I have a 1yo heavy breed gelding who is living in wet conditions for the first time. We're in Australia and it has literally not been really wet in the whole 12 months of his life! We recently had several days of rain which has resulted in a couple of boggy places in his paddock - near...

Australian with four horses - hi!

Ha I just realised you meant which "bit" of Australia, no which "bit" of a bridle... I am near Geelong in Victoria.

Australian with four horses - hi!

Yes the time difference is difficult! Wow you imported a horse from Australia! Normally it's the other way around, we import them from Europe! I ride all of mine in just plain old curved mouth snaffles and I ride in all sorts of saddles depending on what I'm doing (dressage, jumping etc). Out...
