SI Damage - is this behaviour symptomatic of the 'end'

My old mare, no longer with me, had serious SI problems. Bad enough that she was never supposed to recover to ridden work. She did, but it took a few years to get her fully fit and I always had to be very careful about introducing work, building up duration, etc and she never got to the point...

Those of you with Traditional cobs/cob x.....what saddles?

In 2 years I've gone through a Fitform treeless (horse loves it, not enough support for me as he's sharp and bendy!), original HM FlexEE which he just didn't seem to like much, a Black Country GPD which was lovely but he outgrew it, Kent & Masters cob gp that worked for a year or so but he grew...

Tekna, kent & masters or other?

I have a K&M cob GP and really like it. It isn't the worlds best quality leather but it is decent. I bought it lightly used and have had it for about a year and it does still look pretty much like new so it isn't likely to wear out any time soon. I swopped the knee blocks for slightly larger...

    Trotting tension...

.. I feel that if I could blindfold myself, take away my stirrups and just *feel* my way around a schooling session it would be a million times better. I there anything that's stopping you from doing that? I appreciate it probably isn't high on your to do list if he's tense and rushing, but...

    Trotting tension...

I just have one question - what are you, as a rider, doing differently in the school to out hacking? There must be something for there to be such a huge difference in how he goes. It might be a tiny thing that you're not even aware of. As someone who also has a horse who has had wolf tooth...

    Fly veil sizing?

I have to go full size for my 14.2hh otherwise he has the same problem, its too tight between his ears. The only problem is that the ears themselves are huge, he ends up looking a bit silly. It's better than him getting upset about the flies though.

who is right me - inexpereinced or an experienced person??

I agree with you on the feed, if she's gaining weight on that then no reason to change it. As for rugging, at this time of year I'd be swopping rugs am and pm purely because it often does drop cold overnight and with a horse that you want to put weight on better to be safe than sorry. I'd...

Laminitis - why is she getting worse?

A friend of mine has a horse with EMS. If he gets so much as a hint of laminitis, even just raised pulses which are dealt with as soon as they appear, he then abcesses. Is it possible that you're also dealing with an abcess?

    Saddles - Black country

Yes, it can be adjusted though you'll have to let the saddler take it away, can't be done on site. I had a black country saddle for my 4yr old. It was a lovely saddle. Unfortunately he outgrew the overall shape of the tree (he became flatter backed and the tree was too curved through it's...

When is it time to let go?

Your situation sounds not so dissimilar to mine and my old mares. She had cushings, which was being treated, arthritis and not very good feet. She'd been in and out of retirement for a couple of years prior, and in fact was ridden in April and was fabulous. She got her muzzle off in May and...

    Realistic or Not?

I think the only way you'll manage it is to look at places like Preloved and Facebook, lots of cheap horses advertised in these places but you'll need someone much more experienced at buying horses than you are to read between the lines and do the trying out with you. I think you'd also be...

    Rearing, why oh why

You're ok thanks, one is enough! My mare was a runner too, not a bolter in the true sense of the word as she knew full well what she was doing, she just wouldn't stop. For some reason that bothered me a lot less with her, but the thought of new boy doing it freaks me out. I think it's just...

    Rearing, why oh why

My 5yr old likes to rear. He does it when he is worried, or frightened, or feels threatened, or is just a bit happy and feels like it! It is his thing, which to be honest I prefer to him wanting to leg it, and to the bucking that he did have a bit of a go at for a while. He rarely does it in...

Cushings - anyone had experience of nervousness or extreme behav

She was about 14 when symptoms first appeared and 17 when the temperament change happened and she was put on Prascend. We had another 3 years after that, 2 of which were fantastic, 1 a mixed bag of ups and downs, leading to more downs in the last few months. I let her go over the bridge when...

    spanish horses at sheffield

I'm also from Sheffield. Parking is about £6 at the arena itself but we usually park up on the small industrial site 5 minutes walk away (free) and then walk across. It's not so much to save the parking, just that it's 10x quicker to get out than if we park at the arena. Tram is £4 for a day...
