My guy used to suffer terribly but i now use benzol bensinate which you get from your local chemist it works well cost about £6.00 a bottle which usually last 2-3 mths and does not come off in the rain you only need to apply it 2 - 3 times a week this used with a fly rug i just use a shires one...
