No two days are ever the same, but usually, no hanging about. Coming from a different 'country' I found the 'ditch towards' the more daunting, but you soon get used to it. There wasn't too much timber, mostly hedges, which can be big, again the horse is the key to it all. Afterv some 20...
Ifold, they can be worth quite a lot of money, try BIT WORLD, they have a private museum of bits, covering bits back to the Medieval period, they will give you an opinion, selling them of E Bay, you risk getting pea nuts!
Many years ago, I moved house, and after having hunted with a Harrier pack, with little 'real' jumping found I was thrown in at the deep end with a pack that really kicked on, the Quorn, when we moved home. I was very nervous, having watched the field jumping enormous hedges, which simply did...
You could sum it up with few words " Chalk & Cheese", there is no where quite like the Shire packs, they are magic, some days are better than other, but 'Kick on' ,
You have brought back many memories! I hunted with the Holcombe some 60 years ago, and have just deposited a lot of old cine film with the Film Archives at Manchester University, mostly when I Ernie was hunt's man! and Alex Sneddon took over. Does anybody remember that memorable day when we...
This an Army "Universal" bit, designed in the First World War when vast numbers of unbroken horses were imported from Australia and the USA for use on the Western Front, It was so designed that it could be used in different position , reversed, with reins in diffent slots etc. and proved...
I could not agree more with Mr. Swan, I fear you are destined to a lot of heart break over replacing the seat, to join the suede to the pig-skin seat will require about 24 inched of very fine welting which must be done from the reverse side, in other words, I think you will find that the whole...
Somebody was asking about the availability of hunt coat buttons, I have just discovered a long forgotten cache of these, I have 10 large, and 12 small (sleeve) sized, enough for two coats, please PM me if of interest, I have no idea what they are worth,
I first met Barney White-Spunner when he was a Subaltern doing the 'long course' at the RAVC Camp in Melton Mowbray many years ago. I can assure you, he knows what he is talking about, apart from hunting with both the Quorn and Belvoir, he rode point-to-point, inspite of having weight problems...
I always wore a four fold , but mine were made of silk, they were simply an oblong shape, possibly about a metre long by about a half wide, the four fold effect was created when the stock was ironed, they were extremely comfortable, and never rubbed. I hope this is of some help.
I would take issue about the statement that mahogany topped boots can not be worn with a black coat. This is simply not true, you are confusing a coat with a jacket. Traditionally, farmers, tradesmen and dealers wore black jackets with 'Butcher' boots, ie without tops, gentlemen , members of...
I have read this thread with interest, Odders suggests they carry over 18,500 bits in stock. Assuming the average price of a bit to be in the region of £30.00, probably an under estimation, given that they include the more expensive bits in their range, this equates to a stock of in excess of...
Sadly, I must disagree, Sowter saddles were in the top echelon, especially the light weight spring tree model, I hunted on one of these for years, it fitted any horse. Whilst on that subject, the new phenomenon, the "Saddle Fitter" only appeared in the last few years, I first hunted over 50...
