Hello
I am trying to source some low sugar / low nutrition (but still palatable) hay for the winter. I've been using large, round bales, made last August, from a local farmer but - whilst it tested OK for minimum soak, due to lowish sugar and nutrition, and high fibre - it isn't very...
Well, how brave are you girl ??!! End on a good note, they say. Just tell yourself you did that, right after your super schooling session, with the canter and all, and the road bit never happened. Bad dream. Concentrate on the morning and you'll be fine - well done and heaps of luck :-)
Hi Juliette and Livery Blues
Thanks for your posts and for the above link - I have now found a loan pony. My local rescue centre was helpful, but had nothing suitable atthe moment. A friend then put me onto another pony, not in rescue but needing a home, and I'm hopefully collecting her on...
Hi Touchstone
This is really helpful - thanks ever so much - it's good to hear from someone actually using the system, and how to introduce it safely. I am planning a loop, between one end of the L shaped coral, with the barn in it, down alongside an overgrown hedge, with lots of tall tress...
Hi Honey 08
Yes, Equine Metabolic Syndrome is only gradually becoming better known (well, the condition has been acknowledged to exist for years, but under a variety of different names until it was officially named EMS). More research, lately, has given better means of diagnosing it, and more...
Hi Touchstone
This is exactly what I'm planning to build :-) It's reassuring to know that it's worked for your horse - so thanks for that. I'm using a path that follows sheep tracks, which have already eroded some of the planned track area, and I have some home made bark (wood chippings) I...
Hi Canteron - many thanks for this - sorry to hear about your pony, but glad he's fit and sound. Re the EMS, both our ponies have been on Metformin and off pasture altogether for the last 3 months (in large barn and dirt paddock) and all their hay has been soaked (partly why I'm in need of a...
Sorry Touchstone - didn't see your reply before I posted. Thanks and yes, I think I'm coming to those conclusions - just need to find the right companion pony - and quickly :-)
Hi
Thanks so much for all your replies. Much apprecaited.
Mrs D123 - I know I worry too much :-) and that - when push comes to shove, he'll just have to deal with it, but stress lami does bother me a bit. I'm looking for a companion, preferably a mare, and - if I can find one - I agree...
My pony was diagnosed EMS in April, when he had a bout of laminitis, and his companion mare of 15 years also tested positive for EMS (sugar: 149 in May even after 3 weeks on same regime as gelding, during which time his levels fell from 300 to 80). In mid June, retesting showed gelding at...
I'd get samples if poss of all the ones you want to try. Mine just spat out his feed with NAF 5 star Magic in it. He is fussy and can detect Bute at 50 paces, but I thought the calmer would at least be palatable. However, his mare companion wouldn't eat it either and she eats anything ...
Hi Elizabeth
Thanks for this - I had heard of this before, but wasn't certain. Unfortunately, I've tried to give him some this evening and he hates it :-( Just spat it out .... And I only put a little bit in. Very disappointing as I hoped it would keep him less stressed as well as giving...
Hi
My live out native pony is on box rest due to a bout of laminitis and becomes very stressy from about 6 pm till after dark. Does anyone know if Naf Magic 5 star calmer is safe to give laminitics? Vet said use a magnesium based calmer, which this product is, but I'm nervous of anything that...
Thanks for this - I only read one thing about it and - in the meantime - I've had his blood results and he has got EMS, which alone could have caused it. Testosterone therefore was probably a red herring and sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Many thanks anywy Tyra. Much appreciated
Hi
Thanks for all responses to my last post. Am awaiting EMS blood results but, in the meantime, has anyone heard of abnormal testosterone levels triggering laminitis please? Thing is, my gelding was diagnosed with laminitis on Tuesday, and he was very slighty pottery on Monday night. On...
