My horses have always done this - I offer them a blanket and they let me know if they want one, same with fly masks. I don’t know if I deliberately taught it, just noted their reaction when putting on blankets. They are much better at reading the weather than we are.
I totally feel for you. Tomorrow and the next day and the next day will be so hard with no horse to look after, until that becomes the norm.
But what a wonderful way to spend a life, 70 years of horses, I hope you manage to keep your hand in and share some of that knowledge.
Having to ride my horse without a saddle - and she goes so nicely and feel so free, the problem is that when she finds a big sitting trot I can hardly sit it.
