BHS Gold Membership: thinking of letting renewal lapse

I cancelled my subscription a few years ago when I joined WHW and also left my horse to them in my will. The BHS no longer catered for my situation - TREC moved away from the BHS a long time ago and I'm not intending to sit any more exams. WHW provide third party cover for both me and my son and...

Barefoot, bitless and ''natural'' vs shod, bitted and ''traditional'' - your views?

Good management and excellent training of whatever 'label' means happy, healthy and willing horses who are keen to work with their humans. We have always 'mixed and matched' depending on the horse and their work at the time. I took off old cob's shoes when he was ~ 15 on the advice of our...

    British Rider Suspended

Several years ago my son was part of an U18 eventing team. They completed the dressage and XC fine but by the third day the horse was fine but a little tired. The team trainer told us to remove his boots during the warm up. Unfortunately I didn't think it through enough at the time but...

    Peroneus Tertius tear - prognosis?

I know of one horse who had this injury. He had a prolonged period of box rest and then controlled walking in-hand before restricted turnout and then back to his normal field. It took around a year to get him back into work but his owner took everything very slow and steady to build up his...

Has anyone ever had a horse/pony that attacked other horses it was led past/with? How did you fix it?

My old Welsh Cob really disliked other horses in his space. As others have said it may not be possible to train her not to react to other ponies but manage her as safely as possible. When ridden my cob would kick any horse that got too close behind and would try to either kick or bite anything...

    Pony hates yard owner

I'd suggest grass livery unless there is a specific reason why you want your pony in at night. My old Welsh D was on grass livery but didn't like our YO at the time. This was mostly due to a bad experience when the pony when he had a bad back and the YO rode him (once we realised the issue pony...

    Chestnut Stallions

It might be worth contacting Bell Tower stud as I think they may also have frozen semen. They might also know of related stallions standing in the UK?

Are horses different to ride at different times of the day?

My cob is happy to work at any time of day as long as he has a bit of forage first 😂 He lives out 24/7 and if he comes in to be tacked up he expects some food. We often tie him to the fence so he can graze on some longer grass and then he is quite happy. He keeps a very close eye on my if I'm...

    Chestnut Stallions

You could consider Bell Tower Major Tom? 15.2h Irish Draught? My cob's grandsire was Winmaur Sergeant Pepper - the sire of 'Major Tom'. My horse is chestnut 14.3h (out of a 15h bay mare) has very good hind leg movement, is calm, easy to keep and lives out all year round. Might be worth a look!

    Weird vet stories

We once broke the vet  He arrived to remove two or three stitches from pony's stifle following some keyhole surgery. Pony twitched a tiny bit, nervous vet dropped the scalpel he had ready to cut the stitches and sliced open his own hand right down the side of his thumb. Bone was clearly...

    Port Lewis Impression Pads

We borrowed one several years ago as an instructor thought a saddle wasn't fitting the horse correctly. Interestingly the Port Lewis pad didn't show any pressure points - the saddle wasn't the issue but the horse did have mild arthritic changes in his hocks and was compensating by moving...

Things we did at pony club….

My son, now aged 29, went to PC camps in his mid-teens. At one the group of boys had a bareback jumping competition in headcollars. They called it a day at ~ 4ft (1.20m). I'm not sure if there was a winner or anyone had an 'involuntary dismount' but great fun was had by all! Would definitely not...

    Lost tooth 🦷

I knew a gelding who knocked out several of his own teeth attacking another horse through the partition in a lorry ......... He was a phenomenal show jumper but a bit of a nightmare in other ways. I also got told off by a friend for keeping one of my pony's milk teeth when it fell out but not...

Alerting Drivers to Highway Code Changes

Woops! I guess her mind was elsewhere. Hope you are ok. I seem to go out dressed like a sales advert for reflective/fluorescent gear. Round our way there is a lot of woodland as well as open fields so the light varies and riders with dark clothes on bay horses can be tricky to spot. A lot of...
