Mine is only coming in during the day for a few hours at the moment, since we still have grass in the field. In general I prefer to keep mine out as much as possible, and I’d think it would be better for arthritis to be out and regularly moving, but it depends on how much they like their routine...
So I officially own a new horse 😄 and he’s all booked in for surgery at the hospital in early January. I can’t believe how quick and easy everything has been to arrange, especially in the run up to Christmas, but at this rate assuming healing goes well and there are no complications I’ll have...
I asked the vet if he can get ahold of it and he didn’t mention a shortage, just that so few people ask for it, and it comes in a pack of 8 doses, that they end up with more doses than they can use! So he’s asking around other vets to see if they can come up with enough clients so they aren’t...
This is super helpful, thank you! I’ll ask the local vet if they have them in stock tomorrow (if he’s working, I have a feeling I won’t learn anything more until the new year, at this point).
Agreed, it’s not really anything in terms of the long term cost of owning a horse (much less importing one). It’s more the worry of putting him under and cutting him open and associated risks. My vet here in the UK said while it does carry risks they’re very rare and the most common problem is...
With my previous horses I had it written in my will that they were to be given to a charity along with a sizeable donation.
Current horse is not in my will, and is also much more valuable. I have an expression of wishes directing him to be sent to a lovely trainer specialising in the breed who...
That sounds really positive @TwyfordM. So far all I know is it’s not too far up there but that surgery would still need to be done at a hospital, so now I need a quote from them. To be honest even though it no longer sounds like a major deal, I’m getting horse buying fatigue. I’m equal parts...
The vet found the offending testicle via ultrasound and I’m told it’s barely outside the scrotum, not even fully into the inguinal canal. However a lot is being lost in translation so I’m waiting for the full report to arrive, but it sounds optimistic.
Theoretically yes, but he’d have to be kept in an inconvenient place (not nice for me) and separate from other horses (not nice for him). Plus it may never come down in the end.
I really hope this is what he’s doing. Just a shy one 😂
Still waiting from a call from my vet but likely won’t happen now until tomorrow. It’s mostly the risk I’m worried about in the case of major surgery, although it sounds like the overwhelming odds are that it’ll just be in the canal which...
It’s definitely an unfortunate combo, although thankfully both horses are otherwise fit and well! Piro is very common on the continent too, especially in southern Spain, but no one tests for it in the UK, it’s only a problem if you’re moving to the US or Canada (maybe other places too but not...
Yes, if we were to go ahead then the surgery would be performed there and the breeder would do the aftercare. I think it would be nicer for the horse to recover in a familiar environment for one, but also he’d need to be gelded before he came to my yard anyway.
