So sorry to hear what happened dancinghorse. I'm afraid mine was also PTS in November last year after the second operation didn't work. She came through both operations very well but they had no effect. The facial pain got worse and she was rubbing her face on anything she could causing trauma...
Thanks for the replies - it's my vet who has told me to source it on-line as its much cheaper (my insurance ran out ages ago).
Yes gabapentin has been used in horses for a while now who suffer with headshaking due to facial pain syndrome. For some it helps others not. Worth a try.
I have a headshaker as discribed on here before who has had two unsuccessful operations compressing the nerve with the coils. She is still head shaking and its getting worse and I can't turn her out in wind/rain as it obviously hurts (problem as I live in Wales!). :(
The vet has suggested...
Hi Angelbones, Is this a specific type of acupuncture? of just general?
What type of vet is able to administer this? Some more info would be good as I haven't been offered this by my vet?
Sadly the first operation didn't work so she has had the second attempt in February. They put another 5 coils in each side. Again no terrible side effects but again it look like there is no improvement. Totally gutted.:(

She had the second operation at Langford in February and they put another 10 coils in. The other coils hadn't migrated and were still where they had been placed. Sadly it again doesn't look as if it has worked. She is still HS when ridden making it impossible to school and I...
I also have an ideopathic headshaker due to facial pain syndrome. Dancinghorse gave a good account of the disease and you must go to the vet for a diagnosis. My 5 year old mare had platinum coils put in the nerve back in October and i'm afraid it hasn't worked to date so considering a second...
Well she had the surgery at the end of October and the surgery went well. She came home the day after and was turned out for two weeks. No facial trauma or bad reactions. Not sure if it has worked yet but the vets at Bristol Vet School were amazing and they are experts in the field as the main...
My horse has just been diagnosed with facial pain syndrome in the trigenial nerve which is the cause of her head shaking she does when hacked out or ridden on grass. One option given to me is the surgery using the colis in the nerve - does anyone have any experience with this. I know the success...
