I have a copd horse and when his breathing gets bad with a virus and ventipulmin, sputolosin and antibiotics fail then steroid tablets do the job. Maybe ask the vet if you can use steroid tablets instead.
Do you have any idea of yards in the area? Writtle provides a list of yards don't they? Lots of yards stop turnout over winter... That may be your problem. There's loads of yards in Roxwell, you could look at sandon as Danbury good hacking or highwood has a few yards but think they are full livery.
It could have been a haematoma mine had one years ago it could be caused by a bump or it could be if you caught the skin in the girth and it pinched and swelled which can happen when furry ponies lose their coat!
You can feed chaff on a weight for weight basis as a replacer ( certain types that is) so a section of hay is 2kg so you can feed 2kg of chaff ( which is a fair amount) and it is much lower in calories. Dengie is dust extracted but if you are worried about sugar go for an unmolassed version. If...
Does you horse need just grass and coolmix if its a fatty turned out most of the time? Why don't you drop that give a handful of chaff for supplements and when you keep him in you can feed dust extracted chaff as a hay replacer on a weight for weight basis?
Thank you for your advice and help, calories don't = sugar. I think what you mean is that sugars make up the majority of calories. I already use replacers, but thank you for the suggestion. I will have a look into it further but i dont find my hay is a vile sludgy mess after a 12hr soak so maybe...
I soak it still but I bring it in and store it in a thick plastic water bucket with a lid to keep the cold off! I was even considering putting insulation around bucket but I didn't need to, just need to keep the air off it!
Yes he would be better off being out 24/7 COPD wise but unfortunately he doesn't like it! Also he is on restricted rations being a good doer and he would be enormous if out 24/7. I don't use Haynets because as you say it is more natural and better for COPD to feed from the floor. I'm soaking it...
Hello I soak hay because my horse has COPD, haylage isn't an option. I'm concerned that my soaked hay is going smelly in the warmer weather, is it safe to feed and why is it doing this? Is it sweating, or the time spent in water? Also the hay is soaked overnight and removed am for pm... It is...
I've had my horse years it's not the case that i need to bond with a new horse, nor that I can't ride him alone... because I can it's probably the point a few of you have touched on that it is the fact I have no choice! In the past we have had lots of hacking buddies but over time they have left...
