Getting horses used to ear masks

Bought my horse a couple ear veil thingies this weekend as his ears get eaten alive by flies, poor thing. It became very apparent that he hadn't worn one before now and although he was very good and didn't seem scared by them being on him, he was a bit confused and tried to shake them off...

    Ear warts??

Mine's dapple grey so I'm not overly surprised, but it hasn't changed or anything in a week so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks for the advice!

Please tell me I'm doing the right thing?

I'm sure your mare will adapt very well to the new stable :) My youngster is exactly the same, very attached and anxious unless he's with a herd of horses. I keep him at a big, spacious livery in the countryside so we have an enormous indoor barn with plenty of room in the stalls, and 5 acres...

    Spring struggles

My poor boy doesn't seem to be coping very well with the move into spring. He's covered in fly bites, he's got a drippy nose and a little aural plaque in his ear as of yesterday. He just generally seems itchy no matter how much I groom him, and losing his winter coat isn't doing that any favors...

    Ear warts??

Noticed today that my horse had a little, white, flakey kind of growth in his inner right ear, about the size of a 5p coin, maybe a bit smaller. He also had a few raised lumps from fly bites on his neck so 'tis the season again, and I've heard of something called aural plaques being spread by a...

How much do saddles interfere with your riding?

I know I hate how my canter seat looks in a saddle, it's much nicer to look at bareback or without stirrups. I'm doing a LOT of work to improve it at the moment and it's exhausting haha If only I could jump my competition heights bareback, life would be so much simpler

Jumping strong horse in a snaffle

I would certainly give it a shot! My old horse used to be very strong to a fence and basically uncontrollable, but after I switched him into a loose ring lozenge snaffle he softened up - it took a couple of months of very scary jumping sessions (!) but these days he's as good as gold. Horses...

    Loose ring snaffle issue

Both my boy and my sister's pony are in loose ring snaffles with a lozenge link, as that's what they were in when we bought them. Recently I've been wondering if my sister's mare isn't very happy in hers; she got rubs in the corners of her mouth so we put bit guards on and it fixed the problem...

Nearly had a heart attack watching this..

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE Oh my lord, this could have been fatal!! My boy is an angel in traffic, but even he would have spooked at this, and one wrong move could get three people killed (although admittedly, I wouldn't have been so sad about the stupid driver's demise...)

Struggling to get youngster into an outline

My rising 6 year old boy has come on leaps and bounds in his flatwork over the last 6 months, we've had lessons and asked around the yard for advice and he is much more responsive, supple and willing than I've ever known him! I'd really like to start introducing him to working in a better frame...

    Coping without our beloved horses!!

I am away for 3 days with family over the Easter break, and I have only been apart from my horse for 10 hours so far and it is not going well! Already starting to feel a lump in my throat knowing I won't see him tomorrow.. I basically had to get my yard owner to tear me away from my stable door...

    Bit chomping

My 5 year old does this a lot when he's not focused in on something, or when he really wants to go. He hunted when he was in Ireland so I have problems with him snatching out hacking because he thinks he's going to gallop and jump hedges, and in the school if we're doing anything slower than a...

    Bareback Riding

My horse is only young and I have never ridden bareback in my life, so trying it in the summer shall be an interesting experience for us both!! :D

    Slipping on the roads

I was hacking yesterday with some yard friends in quite a large group, and it'd been months since my horse had ridden with so many horses, so he was VERY lively!! I struggled with him for a while until he calmed down a bit and walked nicely, that is, until a huge truck carrying our yard's hay...
