How many weekly sessions when backing?

I grew up on a yard backing and schooling ponies along side the stud and show side of things. It was a very methodical set out routine that every horse or pony would go through the same pattern and the process usually took 4 to 6 weeks. This gave the owner a green pony able to walk trot and...

    Rugs & change of behaviour

My older gelding is prone to 're-introducing' himself to his field mates when they have a rug change or when rugs go on for the first time in autumn. I bought him a second hand rug for autumn last year and the 2 younger geldings were all over him. He's a bit of a nervous nelly so having his rug...

    Terminology?

I felt very smug when my friend 'who knows everything' had not heard of hot clothing when I suggested she hot cloth rather than bath for a winter show. I gleefully gave her a demonstration when she asked how it was done 😜

Bad catchers might be the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced

Can you build a small pen/coral by the gate that you can send him into? Then make sure he only goes in there for something nice (a bucket feed, a good scratch, whatever is his favourite thing - usually food with a native). you need to make 'you' (and for now the pen) the best place to be in his...

    I find this sad

The majority of the comments on the FB page seem to be agreeing with the ladies methods. But I don't feel this is the majority of the showing world. When we took Ben to the Royal Welsh in 2024 we walked him out and hand grazed several times a day as he wasn't used to being stabled. We got some...

    I find this sad

I'm a pony patter and show from the field. My lot are barefoot and hold their own against the 'professionals' I was a bit disappointed when I saw the lady who the article was about having to correct the incorrect information in the article. But I suppose the truth isn't as interesting or news...

    It's 2026! Icy weekend plans?

I have bridles and girths to condition with @cremedemonthe magic stuff so I will be avoiding the outside world apart from checking the animals. They are out and have hay so they are fine, just ice to smash on the water trough really.

    Chilblains

Oh God they hurt don't they. I get chilblains cream from the chemist. I wear 2 pairs of socks in my boots. A cotton pair and a silk boot liner. The trick seems to be to keep your feet dry and warm (just not to warm) and warm up slowly when you get back in doors. I only have them on my smallest...

Cheeky/ridiculous posts you see on Facebook.

I was just coming to post this too. Alot have suggested Sophie Semour on the post on a local page.

    Rug shrinkage!

My ponies have been trying to tell me their rugs have shrunk. I think it's more that their waistlines have expanded. 😱🤣

    How old is your horse?

Ben will be 14, Robin will be 6 and Reggie will be 5. All are fine health wise, Robin and Ben are a bit over weight but hopefully the cold weather in the next few months will help with that.

    Yard vs Yard

Yard 2csounds better if your planning to back him in the spring and he would have company. But my worry would be that your youngster may be to boisterous for they other (older) horses and you may come into some issues there. I have a 4 and 5 year old and they play quite rough at times, my older...

I need a bit of a reality check

I'd be looking for a happy hacking loan home for him to give myself a break. I did it for 3 years with my 'horse of a lifetime' when the kids were small as he wasn't getting my attention and I felt he needed more. It worked for both me and him.
