I don't think you know you've 'gelled' with a horse until you've lived with it for a while, I just think a good temperament makes it more likely that you will gel with it.
I have enough experience to know that when we first got our Iberian people couldn't understand why we'd bought a 'circus horse'. They didn't think much of the lengths we had gone to to find him rather than stay at home and only look around locally. Had we have done that we would never have found...
Ok, so warmbloods and Iberians should both be respected as individual types of horses. Maybe its not wise to try to compare them as they are so different.
Totally agree, I just wish other people wouldn't judge before they had any experience of riding or living with these horses. I bet some people who bothered to find out a bit more about Lusos and Andalusians would be suprised.
Would just like to draw your attention to this post on a different thread by suzied:
Lusos are excellent all rounders. As well as dressage - you can see them doing affilliated PSG & higher & have competed at the Olympics - & showing, you can find them show jumping, hunting, eventing, doing...
There is nothing wrong with owning a horse you don't ride, just don't keep it because you are scared of it or because it is the wrong horse for you. It seems to happen too often.
Definately agree, I've got no problem with any other breeds, I just wish people would investigate a bit more to find a horse that is right for them.
You hear so many stories of people being constantly thrown off and injured and not enjoying riding anymore but keeping the horse anyway!
Its definately important to enlist the help of someone with good knowledge of the Iberian breeds, they can ensure you are getting alot more than an 'average' horse.
Good point that very few Iberian horses are seen in eventing and disciplines other than dressage, however could this be simply down to the fact that few people have heard of Lusitanos or Andalusians?
Also, I understand that when buying a horse its temperament should be the first consideration...
In my experience of warmbloods most are bred for dressage, therefore can be easily compared to Iberians for the job they do. Iberians are particularly suited to dressage and show a natural ability in this discipline but I consider Lusitanos (which me and my mum have one each of) as perfect...
