as per other posts, plus Western Equestrian Society, and AQHA.UK . Depending on where you are, there are some very good western centres, breeders, show venues and lots of shows and clinics throughout the year. Also a new western magazine called 'Western Horse' that is now available in Smiths.
yes my mare is out, rugged up, and a lot of people on the yard think i am a terrible horse owner, she should be in.....hey ho. Sometimes I think they forget that horses are not humans....
Agree with TPO's post - good and bad in both disciplines. I ride mainly western although I will often pop my english saddle on because it gives a different feel and really gets me balancing more. Strangely I find the english saddle more comfortable in some ways - it is softer and more cushioned...
that's a hard one! is a good/experienced rider someone who is confident to ride anything? or someone who is more technical and knowledgable about the dynamics, but is not so brave?

re schooled my old mare from english to western about 15 yrs ago and she actually went better for me! Connemaras make great western mounts, especially as they are so intelligent - they are usually very good at the trail type stuff that requires precision. As others have said, you can still post...
some of the blow up matresses have their own pump, and as others have said, you need to get as high up as poss. Plenty of layers, making sure each layer is nice and long and will cover adequately with no draughty gaps.
I'm also in the make him walk backwards camp! If you take charge of the back, he no longer will 'own' it, you will. We ride western and do a lot of backing - we will back a circle, back through cones, we find it useful to get them on their hocks and also helps in suppling and getting them to be...
