Holding a stable on retention - how long is too long?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I agree with you all and have told Jane that I will not be drawn into the debate (none of my business really), but that, in my opinion, she can’t just hang on to the space for such a long period of time. Mary is trying to be diplomatic and not cause too much...

Holding a stable on retention - how long is too long?

I am close friends with both parties here, as I keep my horse at the yard, and they are both trying to "get me on side", so I'd appreciate some insights please. I'll try and keep it short! Who is right here, as I can see both sides of the situation? Jane sold her horse (for good reasons) in May...

What to wear to take my pony to church on Sunday.

Good point about insurance. I'll check. Think I will go for tweed with a black arm band and a hat rather than a headscarf. I've now heard that another local lady, who has 4 corgis is also going with her dogs - should be interesting.

What to wear to take my pony to church on Sunday.

I own a highland pony (who happens to be related to the Balmoral highlands, but that is entirely co-incidental). My village church is holding a service for Her Majesty this Sunday and they have lovely pictures of HM, flowers and the like as part of that. I have been asked if it would be possible...

Should I get back on this horse?

My lovely old horse - Bob the Cob, who is now 24 - went lame a year ago. A full vet work up with ultra sound discovered he had ruptured the medial branch of one of his fore limb suspensories and also has arthritis in both front fetlocks (didn't scan the hinds). He also has suspected degenerative...

    Flash nose bands

Flash nose bands ........ love them or hate them? Call me old fashioned, and at the risk of being controversial (), but I am looking for a new bridle for my horse, and have looked at loads of different ones. The "standard" (old) design with cavesson type noseband which fastens above the...

    Yard dilemma: not again!

So that's seven and a half hours every time you go!!?? How on earth do you manage to do anything else in your life? That's utter madness!! You need to move to somewhere much (MUCH) nearer!! (or learn to drive and get a car!).

New saddle dilemma - differences of opinion!

My ID cross has just turned 8, in medium work (hacked or schooled 3-4 times per week) and is fit and well muscled with a decent top line. My current saddle fits OK (been checked) but isn't great for me - it's a fairly forward cut GP which is fine for hacking and popping a few low fences (I don't...

    Fly veil with longer ‘ears’

I have a Kingsland one with stretchy ears that fits my "big ears" pretty well. In the past, I have also been driven to crocheting one myself and making the ears out of an old T shirt. I just copied the crochet stitches of one I already had.

What horse products do you use on yourself because they are better/cheaper than the human version?

I don't know about cheaper, but I use Megatek mane conditioner on my nails. it's really improved them.

Full monthly cost of DIY livery

No-one has factored in the "cost" of your own time when doing DIY. Of course you don't pay yourself for the time spent mucking out, turning out, bringing in, poo picking etc etc but it has to have some value in terms of having to be there when you need to be there, or paying someone else to be...

    Dressage turnout

Well ... I'm a size 10 but definitely won't be seeing 18 again!! I look quite nice in my little black "bum freezer" jacket. I think it all depends on the quality of the bum ..... :D

    Restoring chewed leather!!

Thanks Oz .... they seem sounds enough but I agree there's a potential for breakage now they're in a weakened state. Might be time to get a new set (a bit of a pain as these were a Christmas pressie, so not had them long!) ..... Note to self to be more attentive in future. :(

    Restoring chewed leather!!

My naughty horsey has had a good old chew on my best reins (totally my fault ...... !!) and left them sound but with the surface finish (Havana colour) damaged and pitted so the underlying fibrous part of the leather is visible. They're useable, but look awful. Do any of you wise, horsey folks...

I should be on my way to the yard to ride but ..........

I definitely think a few lessons are the way forward. We have a new lady at the yard who (conveniently) happens to be an instructor with a good reputation locally, although I've not had a lesson with her before. Think I might book a session with her and take it from there. Thanks everyone .......
