    “Middle aged woman broke horse”

If it’s at all helpful I’ve been keeping a log of progress with my horse (who is the same age as yours) as we got started. It’s on a tab called ‘building a horse’ on my compassionatehorsemanship.co.uk website. She’s my first youngster so I just wanted to keep track and if it’s helpful to others...

    “Middle aged woman broke horse”

I’m the same (and a big fan of Kathleen beckhams writing and podcast too). I’m backing my first youngster at age 56. Got her as a rising 3 year old a year ago. Slowly building a solid foundation. Lots of groundwork and in hand walking both solo and in company. She’s coming along steadily...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

I’m no expert but I’d not go as low as £5k as he’s already backed. If I were buying him for a child I’d expect to have more training put on him and do that either myself or with a professional. Connie’s are very popular so I think I’d suggest more around 8k.

I think you can get feedback from Joe via snippets of video so it may not be in real time but delayed and still possibly helpful? I think he has this as an option on one of his subscription levels.

Thanks for replying. Yes I totally get that. I’m saving up for a Martin black bosal. You might be able to access Joe Midgely for feedback on your progress via video if you’re a member in His good Horsemanship channel if you are looking for a trainer albeit a virtual one. He’s very good. Or...

I’d be interested in how long you had her in the bosal and where she got educationally in it before you switched.

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Quick question. Bitting. Interested to hear your thoughts. I got a bit fitted ( Hilary vernon snaffle with lozenge) but she’s fussy in it, and I just don’t like it! If she wears it I can just tell her focus is so distracted she just isn’t with me in the same way. Maybe if I persisted it would...

Your favourite wellies? Extra points for slim fitting

Having had my wellies split twice in 6 months I decided to do my own research and look at wellies that were not top of the range. I needed wellies I could walk my dog in, and walk my horse through streams and rivers in, as I’ve been walking in hand preparing a youngster for ridden work on...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

I’ve walked her 50 miles with it on in hand so she’s very used to it. I tend to over prepare!

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Well I just did it. She was calm and stood perfectly for mounting from a wall and we rode a very short 50m (heading towards home) along a quiet paved lane. Took a foot soldier who walked behind me as I want my mare to get her confidence from me up top. She was calm and straight and felt good...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Thanks. I’m a little ways off getting out and about. She’s been hand walked 50 plus miles so knows the local terrain. I’m setting her up to walk home the last quarter mile down the lane with me on board but I need a quiet day. She’ll pick me up from the wall. She’s great with cars but I mostly...

I’m curious to ask folks about their first rides out. At what point did you venture out of the arena post backing? And how did it go? Did you go solo or with another horse? Person on foot etc? I’m on board, taking it very slowly, baby steps of progress.

Comfy but rubbish. 2 splits in 6 months
