    Horsemanship Demo at Bishop Burton

Great write up @Ambers Echo! One other thing that he talked about in the mix was the importance of timing and release. And he modelled that really well I thought, giving the horses time to relax after each chunk of work. That’s something that matches with brain science and I wish instructors...

    Hacking advice please

Hi. I thought I’d share something Ive been trying with my rising 5 year old mare who’s been quite nappy for a while. It’s based on several things Ive read and heard people discuss from Horsemanship circles and after listening and reading Steve peters work in horse brain science I understand more...

    Pictures Producing 5/6yr olds

Lovely to see everyone’s progress on here. It’s been a very up and down process for me with my rising 5 year old who tends to be a little recalcitrant about offering forwards. She’s great at gates and obstacles but getting a willing flowing forwards has been tricky since backing (no physical...

    Hackamore/Bosal training

I started my horse in a halter then added the two rein to it as you’ve done here. After the first dozen rides we moved on. This is how my trainer starts all his horses.. however, he recommends that you move on to something more stable fairly quickly as the cues in this can be a bit sloppy and...

    Bitless bridles

I've ridden in various bitless options, currently in a bosal. But bosals are not cheap and are probably not going to suit as a short term option. A side pull would transfer more clearly to a horse that’s used to a bit. You can get side pull attachments that fit on a regular bridle. I think plas...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Not been on here for ages! And I guess officially we’re graduating from this thread. Is been great to see @Ambers Echo progress this year ( we’re on the same yard) as we manage our youngster’s progression. My rising 5 year old, Sky is doing pretty well overall but still lots to work on. The...

    “Middle aged woman broke horse”

If it’s at all helpful I’ve been keeping a log of progress with my horse (who is the same age as yours) as we got started. It’s on a tab called ‘building a horse’ on my compassionatehorsemanship.co.uk website. She’s my first youngster so I just wanted to keep track and if it’s helpful to others...

    “Middle aged woman broke horse”

I’m the same (and a big fan of Kathleen beckhams writing and podcast too). I’m backing my first youngster at age 56. Got her as a rising 3 year old a year ago. Slowly building a solid foundation. Lots of groundwork and in hand walking both solo and in company. She’s coming along steadily...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

I’m no expert but I’d not go as low as £5k as he’s already backed. If I were buying him for a child I’d expect to have more training put on him and do that either myself or with a professional. Connie’s are very popular so I think I’d suggest more around 8k.

    Backing 3/4yr olds

I think you can get feedback from Joe via snippets of video so it may not be in real time but delayed and still possibly helpful? I think he has this as an option on one of his subscription levels.

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Thanks for replying. Yes I totally get that. I’m saving up for a Martin black bosal. You might be able to access Joe Midgely for feedback on your progress via video if you’re a member in His good Horsemanship channel if you are looking for a trainer albeit a virtual one. He’s very good. Or...

    Backing 3/4yr olds

I’d be interested in how long you had her in the bosal and where she got educationally in it before you switched.

    Backing 3/4yr olds

Quick question. Bitting. Interested to hear your thoughts. I got a bit fitted ( Hilary vernon snaffle with lozenge) but she’s fussy in it, and I just don’t like it! If she wears it I can just tell her focus is so distracted she just isn’t with me in the same way. Maybe if I persisted it would...
