Advice needed - move from NL to UK

Hi all! I hope I can get some good advice here on the forums. It is now 90% certain that I will move from The Netherlands to the UK at the end of summer. I am an astronomer I have applied for a job at the university of Manchester. I have two shetland ponies and the plan is that they will move...

    Which vaccinations?

Thanks! Yes they have a passport now, that's obligatory since a few years in the Netherlands. And for sure for travel. I will do a "basic vaccination" again now, (one + a booster within half a year) to be sure, the early vaccinations were not officially registered at the time although they do...

    Which vaccinations?

Hi everybody. Here's a question on vaccinations. I may move to the UK spring next year (not certain yet) for work. If so, I will bring my two shetland ponies along. At the moment it is time for their yearly vaccinations. (I live in the Netherlands) Here it is common to only vaccinate against...

    Clicker Training

Hi, I also use clicker to train my ponys. My little one has learnt to "say no" "kiss" "give feet" "cross feet" "go backwards" "pick something up and bring it to me" "stand on podest". For my mare I've used it to make her step into the trailer which she was refusing before...

Putting mare in foal - Laminitis

The period that my pony was in foal and nursing she was least sensitive to laminitis. It's often said that a mare in foal is in less danger as she needs more nutricients and is less probable to overfeed. However it's not a guarantee as I have also heard from mares in foal that got it. Also...

How do you keep your grey horses tails white?

I use silver-hair shampoo, exactly as in granny-hair shampoo Works fantastic if it's not too dirty. Heard that betadine shampoo also works perfect. My pony had to have one of her feet in a bag with betadine-water for two days to disinfect it. It had never been whiter before!

    Giving up riding......

I used to ride as a kid/teenager (in a school) but had to give up when I went to uni. Then after a couple of years I met my boyfriend who is from a farm, and to make a long story short I ended up with two shetties. Obviously I will never ride them. But they are so important to me that I will...

    New horse with Dutch passport

As far as I know in the Netherlands, Ownership and Passport are two different things. The passport goes with the horse and is given out by a "stamboek" (studbook). Ownership is a little more complicated, and actually I really never fully understood how it works. However the studbook should be...

    Cheshire riders

Hi, that's a very good idea. Is this information also going to be published online? And if not, would it be possible to pursue this one issue online? I live in the Netherlands but I would be very interested

    laminitics again

Indeed as Ischa says nighttime out is better if possible, if you can't do that try to avoid sunny mornings after cold nights. Unlimited hay access to replace grass eating worked for me as well. And if you can get a muzzle to work that saves a lot of worries. For ponies that have laminitis...

    Advice appreciated on Friesian x

Hi there, I'm not an expert at all on Friesian horses however I do believe they are indeed a slow maturing breed. Anyway, every horse is different and if you feel that yours is not ready yet, why not play safe and wait a little longer Of course ground work will give him good preparation for...
