I have until recently really liked using wood pellets as it is economical, not smelly and easy to muck out, but the downside is it's heavy compared to shavings. I don't find shavings that absorbant and have tried aubiose but found that to be expensive. I don't want to go back to using straw...
Thanks for the replies!
He has been out of racing approx 4 years and been used as a hack. I have had an ex-racer before who also did something similar when I first had him but could also be a lot sharper. But he had only ever been ridden to the gallops and then back home again.

My new loan horse and I had our 2nd hack out today with a friend. The first hack which was over a week ago he was fine even when we walked around the edge of a field.
Today we took him on the side of a different field and I asked him to canter and he just went straight into full racing gallop...
I have had his back, teeth and saddle checked. All was fine. I suspect it was rough handling in the racing yard because as I previously said he is rarely doing it now.
I keep hearing that cobs are safe compared to arabs, tb's and warmbloods but when I was looking for a horse to loan there was not a safe one amongst them.
I had one that napped really badly on a main road and it was advertised by the riding instructor as bombproof who then really annoyed me...
His stable name was Rocky but with another friends pony having the same name it could have been confusing so with his owners blessing he is now called Rox and he already looks up and comes when called.
He is a 16hh bright bay and so far has been almost perfect. He arrived a week ago today...
I am just glad they are at least investigating. At least there is a small hope that she will be kept under observation but I do not believe anyone could look at her and not see that she was clearly neglected and in really poor condition.
I love it !
I empty one bag of the pellets into my wheel barrow and add 1 small black bucket of cold water to it. I leave it for 5-10 minutes then empty it into the stable. I then repeat this until I have enough to deep bed and make nice banks around the area of the floor I want to cover...
It's great news about Ruby so well done EMW!
The mare I saw has been removed from the original website but I don't know if that has anything to do with my complaint to the RSPCA who I did contact again today. They have assured me that they will let me know if they decide to take any action...
I have just checked the original advert I saw and yes the mare is still being advertised and my initial response is still the same she needs help now.
I am going to report her to another charity but advise them that I have been in touch with the RSPCA.
Hope this works!
I haven't had time to reply before. I have not stated which website the mare was on but it was not horsemart and nowhere on the advert I saw did it say the mare had been rescued previously.
I have never reported any animal to any rescue organisation before because I have been lucky enough...
When I learnt to drive we had to beep before crawling around a bend on a country road. The first time i sat in the drivers seat of a car my instructor told me that when I started the engine I would be in charge of a weapon that was just as lethal as a gun, it made me think!
I think sometimes...
