Advice on keeping horses at home.

There is a tap quite close to the field which we would be able to run a hose from but as my step Dad has offered me the field for nothing, I don't want to use too much water and whatever I do use I would definitely pay for. I guess I won't really know how they'll cope until I've done it. I...

Advice on keeping horses at home.

I think my gelding will be ok, he does take a while to settle but is pretty easy going, the pony is quite new to us so that may be a challenge in itself as he is still settling in now. It's a lot to think about.

Advice on keeping horses at home.

Luckily they wont be able to get onto a road. The field is behind the farmhouse and the only access to the road is through a remote operated drive. That's the other thing, during the week, I work until 4pm so in the winter I'm not sure how much riding we'll get done after school/work.

Advice on keeping horses at home.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I will definitely stable one when the other goes out. I was thinking about solar lighting, I think it's something we will have to get as I'm used to mains electricity. Also considering a rainwater collection system, I've never used one before so I dont know...

Advice on keeping horses at home.

I've always kept my horses on DIY livery but I've recently moved back to my home town after living away for some years due to work. My Step Father has offered me one of the fields on his farm for my horse and my children's pony. The field is approx 4 acres so thats good. I will need to fence it...

    Aquila Sports Horses

I've heard of them and seen some good reviews, I've also seen a few bad reviews but no first hand experience, I'm afraid.

Considering returning to a riding school...

I returned to a riding school last year. I was a bit nervous like you. I lost my mare and felt a bit lost without being able to ride anymore. I wanted to keep it up and it had been a while since I'd done any schooling so I was a bit apprehensive but, it was a good experience. I found a smaller...

    What next?

Thanks, Clodagh. She has a small amount of chaff as she is on regumate. It is unmolassed and that's it apart from grass. The grass isn't particularly great, it was much better in her previous home and she has lost a bit of weight since coming to me. I totally understand that she need direction...

    What next?

Hi, thanks everyone for your advice. She's already on Regumate but I will speak to the vet about whether the current dose is suitable etc. She's an older horse and for the last couple of years has only been hacked out at the weekend once, on occasion twice a week. Mostly in walk as they were on...

    What next?

Hi everyone, I posted a week or so ago about my new horse and my confidence riding her, had some great advice so I'm hoping to get some more now. After my last thread, I realised I shouldn't put any pressure on myself or my horse to rush any ridden work so I've been working with her on the...

Confidence Crisis - new horse, new yard feeling a bit useless.

Again, thanks for all the excellent advice. Today I just went down, spent some time in the field with her, she seemed happy to follow me around for hugs and a carrot :) I think I was rushing things when, as you say, there is no need. She used to be on Regumate before I got her but her old owners...

Confidence Crisis - new horse, new yard feeling a bit useless.

Thank you for all the great advice. Will definitely be trying rescue remedy. I will definitely look at her tack too. I think I need to stop putting so much pressure on myself too. I'm going to try and find a good instructor. Tomorrow is another day! :)

Confidence Crisis - new horse, new yard feeling a bit useless.

It's actually calmed me down a lot to know I'm not the only one. Thank you to everyone for sharing. Makes me feel far less foolish! Baby steps is probably the answer and some rescue remedy. I've not tried it before but am willing to try. It's either that or some gin! :)

Confidence Crisis - new horse, new yard feeling a bit useless.

Thanks for all the advice. I think it is probably me, more than it is her. The lunging idea is good, perhaps I'll try lunging her tomorrow and see if we can both do it without any tension and then there is no pressure (that I'm putting on myself) to ride her. I just keep thinking, if I don't...

Confidence Crisis - new horse, new yard feeling a bit useless.

Hi All, Long time Lurker of these forums here. I'm having some problems at the moment and I don't really have anyone I know well enough to ask for help. I lost my horse a year ago and had taken a break from horses until recently as the loss of my mare hit me quite hard and it's been tough to...
