Just thought I'd give an update on this and thank you all again for your advice. He's doing really well, and here's a photo from our second time out doing dressage -he came 3rd in the intro and 6th in the prelim, and we're off out again tomorrow.
Really proud of him and he seems to be really...
The livery yard we're on at the moment is right next to a motorway - we were worried at first that it would be noisy and spoil our time at the yard, but I genuinely don't notice it when I'm there. Also, my horse has become less afraid of traffic since grazing in a field near to it!
Thank you everyone for all the great advice! We had our first go at jumping at the weekend (after a month of building him back up and getting him fitter) - I only put up a 2ft cross and he pinged it about twice the height! I'm anxious to see how he is today, but fingers crossed he will be ok. We...
Thanks so much for the replies everyone! It's great to hear about other veterans that are still active and the advice should be really helpful - will have to make myself a list!
He's not been doing much for the last year, but before that he was competing regularly. I think we'll just take it...
Hi all! Im looking for a bit of advice (and reassurance really!) about competing and looking after an older horse. Do any of you have horses that are competing in their 20s? Ive recently been offered a lovely horse to ride who will soon be turning 20, and Im trying to gauge what I should be...
Yay! I won one too, but with Rosie Thomas.
Should be really good I hope, we are doing XC on Sunday at our riding club so hopefully I can get some good tips.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you, I'll double check but think you'll be right. I might have a go at working hunter next year and see if she enjoys that.
Thanks for the well done! The old girl seemed to know she'd done well; couldn't stop after lap of honour :s
Ah, thought that would be the case. I can see why they do it, it's just unfortunate for us as we can't really go any bigger. I'd feel awful if I pushed her up a class and she went lame again; I'm sure there's somewhere else we can go.
I think the answer to this might be different for different riding clubs, but just wondering what the general rule is..
My local riding club have restrictions on the lower classes, e.g. combination not to have won 3x1st place rosettes. Today my mare and I won the 2ft and 2ft 3 classes (:D)...

I've been looking through photos of my girl for the jumping bloopers thread...sadly I don't have any to rival the ones already on there!
I did notice the huge difference in how she looks between these two photos though:
They were taken on the same day! It's either a very dodgy camera...
I always take mine, it's usually in my jod pocket as it's a pretty small one. Hadn't thought about the possibility of it causing problems if I fell off - surely unless I landed face down, which seems unlikely, there's little chance of it impaling me?
I take mine as there's often no one at the...
My horse does this as well, and it used to really worry me! She canters up with her ears right forward, flicks them back as she jumps and then they go forward again.
I like the comment that it's the horse concentrating - I'll be thinking about that next time we jump!
Same here! I'd rather come 5th or 6th out of 20+ than come 1st out of 2 any day. Some of my rosettes when I've come 3rd out of 3 etc are not my proudest ones and don't go up on the board.
I do have a couple of those kind that I am proud of though. My horse and I don't 'do' dressage. We try...
