I have been through this with NFU too in the past couple weeks. I lost my boy back in August and they have only just paid out. We had to wait for the horse valuer to value how much my boy was worth. They have now paid out but it has taken quite a while to be honest.

I would not recommend NFU to anyone, they were rude and frankly a pain in the bum to deal with when my boy was put down last month. We got them to pay for the vet bills and then cancel the insurance as there was no need for it anymore. Only a few days ago they sent me a form to renew my policy...

Possibly I never even thought of doing that, it was such a shock yesterday that I could have lost my boy I was an emotional wreck! I have sorted him out this morning and he looks a bit brighter so hopefully he's feeling a bit better.
