While you may not be able to guarantee a horse won't spook, I like to know how they spook! Mine has spooked trice at something coming from one side of her (a deer out of a hedge, our dog silently rushing out of long bracken and reeds moving in the wind:rolleyes:), but (touch wood) they have...
Got myself an Australian Stock saddle a year or two ago, which felt very secure. Sadly doesn't fit my current horse, but would love to sit in it again some day, the most incredible thing, high front and back so you really sat into your horse! Think it's a great idea to experiment with different...
You may find this is a new home thing. Horses can behave very differently when still settling into a home and do all sorts of things they haven't/would never normally do. Is he a sensitive TB? I have a very sensitive ex racer out on loan at the moment and had to make sure he went to a home were...
Damn it, maybe that's the trick. Good looking bloke over the fence who's actually got the 'goods' - well you don't want to appear a moody, easy tart in order you might strike it lucky with him? Now I understand!
Yay, I'm not the only one! Though mine was fine when I had a gelding, albeit she was boss, despite the size difference and is good with other horses in general, but for handling and riding she wasn't awful, but definitely different and difficult!
Hmmm maybe it is just me! Both mares I've had have been non mareish without the gelding around, but once he was they would pee flirtatiously everywhere, squealing and one of then could be awkward to catch, be around and spooky when never normally any of the above!
in the Borders. I'd gladly swop with you! Having a blooming nightmare as 8 1/2 months pregnant so having to get someone to lunge pony as getting too much weight on!
do you find keeping them with geldings at close quarters makes them more mareish than just with other mares or on their own?
Had two mares that when kept on own aren't mareish nor has it been obvious when they're in season, but both changed when I've had a gelding at the same time - am I...
Heavens where are you? Far too much of the stuff in southern Scotland, have sheep and lambs in the field, pony on strip grazing and we are considering mowing the pony's patch as it's still not being eaton down!
Address please and I'll send you the cuttings!;)
Started riding when I was 26 (I've just turned 29) and I'd been having lessons every week for 6/7 months. The riding school I was at wasn't very helpful with some of the fears I had (mostly being in a confined space with a horse) and so OH (who has tons of experience owning and riding horses of...
Thanks Tickles, hoping I'll have lost quite a lot of the weight when the baby is born as I've not put on too much, but understand and agree with what you saying! Certainly my riding muscle tone will not be there. I would however like to get back to riding when I can have a bit of me time (our...
