I also live in FNQ on the Atherton Tablelands which are just west and up a mountain range from Cairns. Cairns is beautiful but it is that bit cooler up here with a bit more space.
I am from Kent and moved out here permanently 4 years ago with my Ozzie husband.
I'm happy to have a PM...
I keep mine at home now - have done for about 6 months - before that they were at a livery yard/riding school.
I love having them at home and enjoy bumbling up and down to the stables to see them whenever I fancy. Especially useful when one is ill. I also love seeing them from the windows...
The other option is to keep your mare barefoot and purchase some hoof boots if you feel that she is uncomfortable with the increased work. This way she is comfortable when worked yet gets to stay barefoot for the other 23 hours a day when she is at leisure.
Outside of a little village called Ravenshoe in the Atherton Tablelands. I'm 2hrs west of Cairns up the mountain range in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia
LOL Bumper - those are the important ones and I have most of those.
I also have EBW (equine massage) qualification and Senior Dressage Instructor and Trail Guide issued by Horse Safety Australia
I'm so sorry to hear your story. How awful for you and your lovely boy.
I can't answer the first part of your question - I'm not sure how long it would have taken him to die. I can definitely answer the second part of your question though and tell you I would be let down, horrified and so...
