What do other horse owners tend to do?
I don't understand the premium being higher because you didn't have him vetted, here that would just mean we couldn't insure the horse for more than (usually) £5000. If it'd bring the premiums down could you have him vetted now?
February is awful, it will get better.
My horses had 2 breakfasts this morning then out onto 30 acres which does have some grass with their friends and I'm pretty sure they've stood at the muddy gateway most of the day.
We don't seem to get the extreme weather the rest of you are...
Any idea whether you can soak chaff like you do with hay?
We have unlimited pretty poor feed value haylage (tested) but my cobs are on soaked hay which will run out.
There is a guy near me that does cheap chaff, it's 15kg of chopped and dust extracted hay for £8.
Trying to decide whether to...
We're near Manchester, supposedly the wettest place in England, but we hardly ever seem to get the extreme weather everyone else talks about.
I was put off moving here due to the reputation but frequent grey days and drizzle more often than not is much better than storms and flooding.
I've had horses forever so can't think of any surprises with them but moving from my own field to livery when I was 23 was an eye opener.
The open judging and bitching, 40 year old women behaving like school kids! And the YOs, constantly changing rules, special rule-breaking privileges for...
From the photo it looks a bit like a slice in the frog, is it like that? Maybe stood on flint or similar.
Without vet or Farrier others little you can do other than treat for thrush, no harm in it. I like to so a cider apple vinegar rinse then field paste or similar.
Anti inflammatory diet? Worked wonders for my mare, basic grass nut and powder balancer and all the herbs.
A better barrier cream, not sure how breathable nappy rash cream is, you may be trapping bacteria in a nice humid environment. And try not washing, you won't need it if the barrier is...
I think they went out of business a few years ago. I recommend Blazers but their latest delivery of the unbranded ones the pellets are very dark so not the nicest looking bed.
I'm a fan of teaching response to the lightest aids so don't do gradual escalation of pressure.
Its a gentle squeeze then a strong flick with the whip - and straight back to the original pace and ask again rather than just keep going.
I ride cobs and I feel that gradual escalation - squeeze...
That's pretty reasonable. You're mainly covering for vets fees which are the same whether your horse is worth £100 or £100k
Harry Hall does cover for accidental injury with a colic add on, that may suit you.
I have this a lot. My yard are very intermittent riders so I often show new liveries the routes then people fall out with them and there's an expectation I'll stop riding with the new one despite no one else going out.
I'm not having that. It does mean some people stop speaking to me and I'm...
I'm in the latest racesafe. Occasionally I think I should just get a back protector or air jacket but I do barely notice it and it's the best protection.
Plenty have copied the racesafe design now, they're all the same level of protection so worth a look.
We have cats that just turned up, some obviously genuine ferals some more likely strays. They have their own territory around the farm.
Most important thing is to make sure they're spayed, then provide a little dry food to complement the diet of mice and catch them if you think there's...
