I really should... but I don't. I've got a sound horse and we are having so much going out and about. I do something most weekends eg a lesson, arena hire, box hack. So I probably spend around £150 I reckon. I've got camp this month too, so I guess more like £500 this month 😱 but I only do camp...
Definitely riding for me, I'd happily (and did for my old boy!) pay for a retired horse to live out on retirement livery or turned away. Which even if I don't have the money, gives me the time to loan/ride someone else's. But if they couldn't be ridden or turned away I wouldn't spend years...
I don't think it's a 'sensible' decision, but I try and live my life doing what makes me happy and on balance, the horses have made me more happy than sad overall. Its like having children or being a nurse, neither of those are objectively sensible from a financial or free time perspective, but...
I've just checked the weather for an XC clinic tomorrow, saw this and really expected it to be cancelled! It's on a surface but outside. I've made my decision on what to do (not go!) And the instructor has kindly said he will keep the payment as credit towards something else. But I was curious...
I'm on livery in the NW where it already rains a lot 🙈 and we're on 6 hrs turnout per day and this works well, as I ride before work, then she goes out about 8.30/9 to 2.30/3. I've been turning out in the wind, it's only ice/heavy snow when I don't turn out as its not safe as she's shod all...
I think a lot of people call shite horses projects, when they are really just poor quality or injured animals. It's sad for them, but doesn't mean anyone will want to buy them!
You do sometimes get more expensive projects when it's justified, eg a beautifully bred WB that would have been 20k...
Thanks everyone! Looks like I need to book a trailer driving trial soon 😊 I guess I also need to look into some car options. An SUV type plus a trailer but just travel one could be a reasonable option, just need to investigate a bit more!
Thank you! So my current car doesn't have a tow bar and won't tow anyways, so unfortunately I can't borrow a trailer and see😕
All my friends have either 7.5 or 3.5 lorries so nobody to ask. I guess I might be able to have a lesson in trailer towing somewhere and see?
Sorry this has probably been done to death... but now you dont need a test for a trailer, I wanted some opinions from people who have gone from a 7.5t to a trailer. Or people who have taken to plunge with finance for better transport.
I currently have an 2002 7.5t iveco which is fab and I have...
Momentous weekend for me, had our first show jump lesson together (since I bought her in January!!). She's had a few issues over summer, a lot of box rest and rehab, but all good for now so just trying to crack on. She was extremely happy to be jumping again 🥰
I'd lost the love of everything a...
Completely agree with lamehorses, depends what size you want! If you are happy with a 14.2ish then a Connie and if you want bigger get a cross. Other option at that height is a Welsh D, I love them but they aren't for everyone! I do think Connies are more straightforward usually (obviously...
I've got the equi bands, I long rein mine with just a headcollar and the band under her belly and she is starting to let go and relax. But you could easily do the same in a bridle and also use the band behind the back legs if needed.
Agree with previous posters don't use anything that connects...
Honestly saddles are so personal! What fits one person might be awful for another. Can you have a ride in both and see how you feel? I don't like synthetic saddles, I have a K&M and it's really comfy so that would be the choice for me.
I don't strictly limit it to once a week, but I would aim for 4-5 times a month. So it might be an SJ lesson on a weds, then a farm ride on the sat, then nothing the week after. Also it honestly depends what level of jumping you are doing in comparison to your horses' ability. A fit event horse...
