Please excuse my ignorance but what is 'plaiting' please?

He's 13 and not as fit as I'd like. He's been barefoot since I've had him in 2007.

Any other ideas as to why this is happening and solutions will be gratefully received. I have also made contact with my vet asking the question. Don't worry Capriole I have made the decision that he is not to be ridden until this is sorted, would never forgive myself if anything happened to him...

He's trimmed every 4-6 weeks by my barefoot trimmer.
