Many thanks for all your helpful posts. As my horse is 16.3hh and is currently on 1 bute per day I think I will probably stick to this as he is doing well on it. I was just a bit concerned about any possible long term damage but everyone more or less agrees that a big horse should be able to...
My 16 year old horse has been suffering with recurring slight lameness in his right fore for approx 18 months. Vet suspects soft tissue damage but after Xrays and Ultra Sound only an MRI scan will give a definitive diagnosis - which I can't afford as he is not insured. After joint injections...
I have 2 horses, the younger of which always gets a reaction to vaccinations. The site of the injection becomes swollen, hot and tender. The first time he had a big swelling on his neck and it was quite stiff so I had to give him a few days off. The next time, he was given the injection in...
thanks for your reply. However, the tablets can be supplied in different dosages - so, for instances, you can get one tablet for 0.25mg or one tablet for 1mg. Saying that your giving half a tablet doesn't really help as it depends on how much it contains. I appreciate your help and thoughts...
I have a 16.3 chunky horse who has Cushings. My Vet recently prescribed 1mg Pergolide. This seems a very high dose to me as my last horse who was 15hh was only on 0.25mg. Do you think this is right? The vet assured me this was the correct dosage for a horse of his size but I can't help...
My horse started headshaking a year ago in winter - it was just as if he was getting an electric shock up his nose which, because it was so violent, knocked him off his stride. It started some time after he had a tooth removed. I'm convinced that this tooth removal somehow affected the...
Just one little tip: when you are walking towards the ramp if your horse hesitates NEVER turn to look at the horse. Always keep looking ahead - looking back at the horse will deter the forward momentum as they do not like direct eye contact. Good luck.
You are in a catch-22 situation. The horse needs work - he has a lot of negative energy which right now is focused on stressing out at the least little thing. I can assure you that if he was tired, having done a decent amount of work, he would be much better to handle and quieter in his box...
By the way, you might be interested to know that the same drug is given to humans for Parkinsons Disease. Cushings is due to a benign tumour on the pituitary gland which causes hormone imbalance. Symptoms of cushings are, lethargy (usually not noticed by the rider as it develops slowly and...
Hi Snoopysue: my horse had cushings for years. He was on the lowest dose of Pergolide. The vet actually gave me a pill cutter (a little plastic box which when you placed the pill in and then closed it would cut the pill in half). I think you can buy them in chemists? but the vet should be...
Daisy: might be worth getting the vet to look at your horse. Mine came back from summer turnout, mixing with about 30 other horses, and picked up a bacterial skin infection that looked like rain scald. It was slowly spreading so the vet took a skin scrape and pinpointed the problem. Then he...
I have a 23 year old who developed a tooth problem in January 2007. Found him in a muck sweat - soaked from head to foot one morning. Called Vet. Eventually found this tooth needed removing. It was done under local anaesthetic. He remained at the Vets for a few days for observation and then...
Sorry to butt in here, but can I ask a question too? Are there any long term side effects caused by taking such drugs? It may be that my horse will have to take anti-inflamatories for a long time and I was wondering if there would be any damage caused. I know some people swear by Devils Claw...
I had to take my horse back to the Vet recently due to intermittent lameness, having been seen 2 months prior to this with a full investigation (Xrays, nerve blocks etc). He was run up in walk & trot and then lunged to check the level of unsoundness. Vet said he was lame on the off fore...
