Working correctly on lunge with no surcingle - German string?

Thanks for the replies ad suggestions, from the description the Harry horse and draw rein aids are the same thing as the German string. I was going to fashion my own out of some line and clips. Hopefully this works for us! The physio has given us exercises to do, they just don't seem to be...

Working correctly on lunge with no surcingle - German string?

I'm looking for some advice & support on getting my boy to work correctly on the lunge without anything around his girth. Background: Diagnosed with KS (5 touching), had the ligament snip surgery in March. Previously treated for ulcers, now thought to be caused by the KS pain. The surgery...

How much does scoping for ulcers cost?

Mine was about £400, at the vets including an overnight stay (Essex). Agree that it's the drugs after that add up though. My 4 week peptizole and sulfracrate course just cost £700.

    Feed & Soaking

Glad to hear it's made a positive difference. It's also given me a kick up the bum to get weighing my nets again, so thank you!

    Feed & Soaking

I'm not sure how warm it is where you are, but for me in the winter I definitely need to soak for longer than a few hours to get the sugars down enough. Currently overnight is working well for me, but have had hay ice-lollies quite a lot of late!

Bute trial, would it highlight KS?

Thanks both for your replies. Be Positive: I may have got the sachet size wrong, he had 3 sachets a day split between 2 feeds which assuming all sachets are the same size is more like what you were expecting. I've never used bute before so it's all new to me. He had a work up on initial vet...

Bute trial, would it highlight KS?

I'm struggling with what might be causing my boy's issues and am worrying about potential KS. I've had him 3 years, 2.5 of which he has been a giant softy. Lives out 24/7 in summer, now in overnight. Ad lib soaked hay and 3 tiny feeds of pink mash/limestone flour and supplements a day. He...

    Rabbit(s) a bit off it?

Just to mention quickly, if you do have to bring them in, make sure you don't heat their room and open the windows a bit if possible. They will be used to cold temperatures outside and have a corresponding thick coat so they'll easily overheat in the warmer indoor temperatures. And if you do...

    Yard water consumption info

For a large yard (approx. 50 horses in winter, sometimes more in summer), we average 30m3 per horse pa. That is with automatic water troughs, a small flat and a leak. We had a bad leak last winter which over doubled our consumption, even then we didn't hit a 5 figure bill for our 6 monthly...

    experiences with equimax worming tablets?

Use these on one of our ones who refuses paste. He eats them mixed in a feed and has had no issues with them, a very useful option.

    Yard cats

For worming butter and marmite on tablets was the only thing that worked for me, but you have to spend ages watching to see who has eaten it, and did the tablet make it all the way down... Sometimes I did resort to old bath towels and pounce on them, make a kitty burrito and force it down. Not...

    Ulcers #sigh#

I have seen a haynet tied inside a (large, with big holes) packing crate work well for a shod horse. The net was tied in 2 or three places so didn't come out and crate heavy enough to not be flung around. ETA, crate had an open top, that's how they accessed the hay.

Is it me.. turning horse out wet.

I have no opinion on this, I am only trying to explain the physics behind the phenomenon. Liquid water has a high heat capacity, i.e. it takes a relatively high amount of energy to raise the temperature. This energy will come from the surrounding environment, predominately the horse in this...

    No, cat, NO!

Mine do the same, get all upset if they are shut out of the bathroom when you go in, then immediately ask to go out the window. No idea why. Worst thing is I removed the rabbit hutch they used to use as a step off the roof, so if they do make it out they are then stuck and asking to come back...
