I haven't done much with mine except pray that he grows - to no avail.
He's happy being handled, stands for farrier and dentist, has had a saddle and bridle on for a couple of short and quiet hacks on a leadrope (leading from a headcollar), and has been in the box once or twice. He has had 3...
I don't know anyone who has a front unload one (I'm in South Africa and we're not fancy here!) and all of mine have loaded and unloaded with no issues at all. I stand on the side of the ramp and put my hand against their hindquarters as they come out to make sure they don't step sideways off the...
I don't hack during the week so usually do something like
Monday: off
Tuesday: dressage lesson
Wednesday: jump
Thursday: Lunge (with poles)
Friday: school
Saturday/Sunday: One day school and one day hack (if there's a show I swap the schooling for competing)
We always have one in the ring while the other is jumping, and no rules about at what stage of the course they can go in the gate. They're usually in before the bell starts to be honest.
But it is generally understood and accepted that you stay out of the jumping rider's way, stick mainly to...
Depends. My current horse was backed at 5 and a half although personally I'd have done it a year earlier and hacked. He's very big and totally sound but would have benefitted a lot mentally from an extra year of low pressure riding.
I just bought a 2yo a couple of months ago. I was looking at...
I work a full time job plus freelance every night and over weekends to double my income (most months, but not all!). When I'm at the yard, I often ride someone else's horse to make some extra cash seeing as I'm there anyway and to get more saddle time.
Luckily I'm not a massively social...
Wondering if you could point me in the direction of any equestrian brands or businesses that you know of who have blogs as a secondary part of their site (i.e. not just standalone equestrian blogs).
E.g. Horze USA has one. Derby House has one. Rideaway too. Any others would be greatly...
I have a 17.2hh WB (to be honest, it's entirely possible that he's bigger but I stopped measuring when he hit 17.2!) who was only backed at 5 and a half. He's now just turned 8 and is only just starting to become a little less gangly and goofy.
He's been a slow developer and should be further...
I too am astounded at these prices - and we see some pretty expensive warmbloods here in South Africa I think!
But things like ex racers would never ever fetch the type of prices being asked there. I can see why OP bought a horse in the UK :O
I'm not in the UK but have been desperately trying to get my horse out for his Medium debut. I have so far been thwarted four times. First time late last year - got an abscess. Second time (in January) - dressage association deleted his profile in error so couldn't enter. Third time - rained out...
What boots do you use on your large horses?
Struggling with my 17.3hh WB - he seems to be able to squeeze into the Tekna full size ones, and sometimes Veredus. Any other brands that come up big or who do an XF in tendon and fetlock boots?
It's different obviously as I live in South Africa, but we ride in that kind of weather (and significantly hotter) for a good seven months of the year. If we didn't we'd never ride though! It's far more tolerable early morning or late afternoon but if lessons need to be done at 2pm or whatever...
