I love J O'B but this is the second time he's covered vets bills, and both times he's had me shouting at the radio. He actually has very little understanding of what is involved in procedures or charging("How can they charge hundreds of pounds just to clean a dog's teeth.....?" The item was...
I presume he's had all the standard checks - teeth, back, maybe scoped for ulcers, tack fit? Does he behave the same with other people? Can you access his history to check whether he's had a trauma or accident of some kind involving trailers etc. What are you feeding him, what's his turnout...
Walking them down really does work, even if it takes hours the first time. Can you make the field smaller? Ideally you don't want them to be able to graze while you are crossing vast expanses to reach them. Also no eye contact, approach from the side etc all help. If they look at you, look away...
It's been so cold here troughs have been refreezing within minutes so soaking hay is out. I don't think it can be good for them to eat soaked hay that's freezing solid in nets either. I've stopped for the moment and upped her timothy haylage in tiny holed nets (one of them doubled, she still...
We are incredibly lucky to have 300 acres of mixed woodland surrounded by miles of open fields straight out of our back gate. It's privately owned by someone living elsewhere in the country but managed by the Forestry Commission. There's no parking near the woods, so the only people who walk in...
Mine scoffs anything but she started refusing her feeds with Pro Earth so I switched to Forage plus. She was ok initially but then refused that as well. Now she's on Equibalancer MetaTrim and no further problems. The spec isn't quite as good but it's suiting her very well.
It hasn't got above zero here in North Wilts for several days. Horses are at home but the yard taps are frozen and their turnout areas (including arena) are also frozen solid. I've been making up their morning and evening feeds in the utility room with hot water, which they love - I keep telling...
By "Participate in a work exchange involving horses" does she mean she doesn't want to actually pay rent either? Nor do heavy work? I imagine her drifting round ethereally, occasionally waving her arms around over a cup of hot chocolate, and scuttling off if she sees any DIRT or DISORDER 🤣. Good...
I've always used sheepskin on my western saddles, lovely and warm and soft. I now have a Heather Moffat on my Smart saddle, which is also very comfy but it;s hard to attach it tight enough so that the pad itself doesn't move around a bit on the saddle.
The latest tactic (news items popping up on my FB feed) seems to be arguing that hunting is all about socializing and that if it were "banned" then rural isolation would increase, impacting farmers' mental health. I mean, surely legitimate drag hunting would do just as well for meeting your mates???
Then they should have spent the last 20 years hunting within the law instead of blatantly flaunting it and causing mayhem in the process. Boo-hoo-ing about it now is too late. I've had them over my private land twice in the last 3 years, upsetting my horses badly (it's bad enough when they are...
