Sorry you're having such a hard time :( I just wanted to say how great it is that you recognise and take responsibility for your 'less than friendly' horse. I am on the other side of this at the moment with another horse who has attacked both of mine (and I mean attacked, injuries to both horses...
I have an ideal GP saddle which is slipping forward slightly so I want to attach point straps to see if this helps. There are webbing loops attached to the points, does anyone know if/how I can attach point straps to these myself? Or do they need to be stitched on by a saddler?
I'd try a horsebox, and travel backwards if possible. But you can also do a lot to help him feel happier in the trailer. Have it open and walk him towards it but past it and around the trailer regularly, a few times a day. When he's doing this without showing signs of stress start putting his...
Oh my goodness! I have loved reading these, what an eye opener! I had no idea livery could be so bad! My yard was the only one I looked at and it's great, no daft rules, everyone's friendly, we're all DIY so we all help each other out. I am never ever leaving and will be sure to give my YO a...
Thank you :) That's good to know. I'm going to get in touch with some saddle fitters and see if I can find one with a range of saddles to try so I have an idea what to buy her.
Wow! Thank you all so much for your replies! Lots to think about, and loads of points I hadn't considered before. Really interesting how different styles of riding and different sports have their different 'outlines' but all are aimed towards the goal of having the horse in balance and working...
Does anyone know why we insist that horses work in an outline? Is it actually of any benefit to them? Or is it just to give us better control?
It's one of those things I've always just gone along with. I've never thought to question it until breaking and schooling Rosie, I have no intention...
I have a 4 1/2 yo Welsh C mare. She's got a lot of filling out to do over the next few years. Obviously her saddle is going to have to change shape too.
My question is would you invest in a good saddle now, and hope it will be able to be adjusted enough by the saddle fitter as she grows, or...
Go for it! She sounds perfect, you'll kick yourself later if someone else gets her. You know the rewards will outweigh the bit of extra work. Heart over head this time. Have some fun :D
I took Rosie to the local bloodhound training meet this week and it was awesome!
It was on a farm 15 mins walk from our yard so a couple of us hacked there.
She really loved it! She was so well behaved standing around waiting at the beginning, and walking/trotting to the first fields. She...
Great thread :) I recently bought my pony on first viewing (not advised I know) but she was 400 miles plus a ferry trip away. Because I didn't want to make that journey for no reason I tried to find out as much as possible before hand to make sure she was the right one. I asked for loads of...
Wow, thanks guys :) This is all so encouraging! I'll keep doing what I'm doing then. I am hoping to get her out on the bridle path on her own next week, there are a couple of good hills near by to help build some muscle on her. I have just booked a trainer to come and start to teach her to lunge...
Bit of background, I bought Rosie, a 4 1/2 yo, well handled but unbroken Welsh sec C. I am in no rush to do anything particular this year, just some hacking, and teach her some basics, going at her pace and learning together. She is incredibly laid back and confident about being handled so her...
I know this thread is really old, but I want to say how encouraging it was :) A few weeks ago I bought a well handled but completely unbroken 4 yo. I have seen horses broken and helped with early schooling but never done it alone, and this is my first pony since I was a teenager. My plan was to...
