My boy has recently been broken in (around 5 months ago) our riding was going really well, up to a point where he become so nervous of everything. He comes to a point on the road, which is on a corner and stops dead and will not budge until he is really coaxed on. I've walked him out by hand...
I just feel so useless, he is a lovely horse and we have a really good bond and i desperately want to get him going well and be able to enjoy our hacks out together. Just every time we go out I feel like neither of us is enjoying it.
I think leading out in hand is the best, there is only one lane out of my stables and he's been down there loads of times, it just still seems to freak him out. Sometimes he can take the pee a little, but today he was genuinely scared. Maybe if I get him into a routine with a morning walk, and...
Thanks SadKen, I do think I am uptight and worried when i'm out riding him which in turn will stress him out which makes me even more uptight and worried so its a vicious circle. When on the ground I am a lot more confident which I think makes him a lot more confident. I do have some rescue...
After a terrible ride out which included lots of spooking, spinning, snorting and cantering off I have decided that in order to sort out my problem I need to instil some confidence in my lad. Not only is it ruining my motivation for riding it is also ruining my confidence as I feel like a pretty...
I do think setting myself a little goal is a good idea, maybe try to get out around 2 - 3 times a week. I took him out for a 20 minute hack out and had a nightmare of a hack. Rather than put me off its kind of spurred me on to try even harder.
Recently I've lacked the motivation to go riding. My horse is quite young so there's no such thing as a relaxing ride out. I much prefer to go up, brush him, fuss him etc. Once I tack up and get on its fine, and I always thing why am I so unmotivated to do this. I would take a break but I have...
Reading this thread I can't believe that people are so eager to make nasty comments to someone about something that is so personal. Whatever your opinion there is a way of saying things that ease the blow. I wonder whether these people making hurtful comments would even think about saying them...
It seems winter will soon be upon us, been making a list of everything that needs sorting out before the weather turns. It made me think of what else I could do to prepare that I havent thought of. So... What do you do to prepare for winter? Also around how many bales of hay do you buy in for...
FfionWinnie - what sort of diet would you recommended, what's best, what to avoid?
My boy isn't footsore, that's why I have started debating the whole barefoot versus shoeing. I think trimming back an already sore foot would increase the problem rather than solve.
I'm quite happy with...
Thanks for all the advice! Think I'm going to try the barefoot route and see how it goes. I think I just fell into the old school thought of every horse needs shoes.
TT I was planning on having him shod. As planning on doing a little more road work with him.
However, as I said I have very little experience with barefoot. Maybe a trim would be more beneficial, and then could always shoe later on if it doesn't work?
