    welsh sec d

Mine has Derwen and Ionos lines and his temperament is amazing. He has spark and character, but is safe. I wish I could replicate him, (or even better, keep him going well into his forties so we retire together).

    My next equine project horse

I remember baby Ted, his story was what made me join the forum. Love his updates. Happy New Year to you and your crew.

    Sleep well Blueberry & Uti

End of an era, and thoughts are with the connections. Hardest, but kindest, decision any horse owner has to make. They were both truly special horses. I had my old boy put to sleep with his pair bond. Both had suffered when their other friend got colic (horrid for all concerned). On the face...

    Horsebox parking woes

Our yard charges £15 a month for a 3.5t to park.

How often do you see your horse?

I’m on full livery and average 5 times a week. If more, then the 6 or 7 day is for a groom only. If less, he just extra time off. I’ve just moved yards to one with more turnout, so I feel a lot less guilty if I can’t do a day as it just means more field time for him.

    Wild Deodorant

I changed from fussy to wild. Fussy worked well, I just prefer the consistency and scent of wild. You really don’t need to use much at all. I used many other no-aluminium options before these, but both these worked best for me. If changing, be aware that it is a deodorant not an...

    Warmest Horse Gear

I have the long stierna winter coat and love it. Great for riding in, keeps legs warm which seems to help with overall warmth. Stays put even in windy conditions. Waterproof, and keeps me and saddle completely dry. I also think it’s really flattering as a nice shape.

    First lorry for my birthday!!

I insure with NFU and use Equine Rescue for breakdown. As others have said, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, spare headcollar and rope, breakable tie rings, grooming kit, buckets, poop scoop are all useful to keep in lorry full time I also keep my competition hard hat, gloves and schooling...

Strangles vaccine - should we be embracing it more??

I’m considering it. Just had mine scoped for a yard move, so now a good time. Going to chat to vet about it this week. Now on a busy yard, with lots of horses out and about, and my horse is getting older, so feel it could be worth protecting him a bit. Apparently it is well used in Sweden (but...

Have anyone elses horses lost the plot this last week?

Mine has been rather “jolly” this week. He’s old enough to know better! Had no brakes during a clinic, cantered on a hack when I asked for trot (was an amazing canter though), and the only trot he was willing to give today was medium :D

Any effective method to keep rodents away from vehicle parked in field?

I’ve just had my washer pipes munched (been in same yard, parking place, for two years and never had an issue before). Box is used regularly, which I thought would help, but maybe not as warm engines can attract them. Garage recommended rat stop, which is peppermint oil spray. I’ve sprayed all...

    Rambo Supreme Turnout Lite

I’ve got the 50g Rambo. Really useful rug, waterproof and takes liners.

    Feather,a welfare issue?

I had an Irish cob with full feathers, full tail and massive mane (long and thick). He lived out, and was washed maybe twice a year. His skin was always good under all the hair. Once retired I left him to grow a full coat and he was unrugged and healthy (did shorten his tail to keep it out the...

    Best Quarter Rug

Another thermatex fan here. I found the sizing matched the guide really well (no sizing down as you do for rugs). I think it was on a thread on this forum that someone described it as a hug from a rug and that feels accurate. It really doesn’t budge. The bright orange is great for hacking.

    Should I/can I report this?

It’s a grey area, and to an extent depends on what test is used. The HMRC test of ‘employee’ is tighter (in my experience the HMRC are keen to find that someone should be employed). The test from a tribunal perspective is a judgement based on three elements Control - how much say does the...
