Teaching an Old 'Horse' new tricks ........

A friend of mine clicker trained her horse who did the same thing. It took a while but in the end he would back up as soon as she entered the stable and wait for the click and treat. So much so now that once all tacked up and ready to go he waits for the treat as he goes through the stable...

exciting ways/places to learn to ride

What about having a lesson on a western saddle? Still okay for a beginner (if you can find a riding school that gives western lessons). I was going to say a side saddle from the title but maybe not. Hope you get something sorted!

    Flippin' wind and weather!

Oooo painful! My horse did a similar thing last year and it terrified me. I take it you weren't riding side saddle? My horse always goes alot faster with her's on and gets full of her self and then lacks brakes. Hope you feel better soon!

    Sensitive Ears and Bridle

I've recently started using a double bridle with my mare and just can see it's slightly rubbing her by her ears. Can anyone recommend a good make? I'm quite interested in buying the cut away browband that gives her some comfort around the ears. I've just been borrowing one to see if we get on...

I'm probably going to regret saying this...

I have a working cocker spaniel and she's as calm as anything when she realises she has to settle down. She knows when she can have her loony times e.g. when out walking and in the garden at home. She's very intelligent, my constant shadow and really tries her best to please you. She was hyper...

My plodder is under estimated....fizzy hack day rant!

She's just come out of season I would say. Sorry I didn't make myself very clear in my first post...it's my nerves from today. She's owned by the riding school and I loan her at the same time.

My plodder is under estimated....fizzy hack day rant!

Thanks for the replies! We were in company, so it's not that. I have her on loan from a riding school. I had a bad riding accident 4 years ago and I have her a building up confidence horse. Which 99.9% of the time she does. Silly thing is though she is no where near as bad as the skitty arabs I...

My plodder is under estimated....fizzy hack day rant!

My 16.2hh loan ID who I keep on on livery at a riding school is classed as completely bombproof. In the school she is lazy but then has got to use to doing her three strides of canter and then going to walk straight away...cheeky madam, until I get on! On a hack she is pretty good, can get...

Has anyone here decide/may decide between children and horses?

I often feel the same. I love children but can't see myself having them. But then I'm single at the mo and if I found the right man I might feel differently. I don't compete or anything, my horse means the world to me. I'm not a broody person but quite happy to help with friend's children. I'm...

Forgotten your jodhpurs, girls? Showjumping's desperate image bid

eeek! What's wrong with the old look, that's what I've always liked about certain equestrian disciplines that they'be kept their tradition. I wouldn't dare ride side saddle in my knickers to attract more to the sport! lol!!

Do you feel more comfortable on certain breeds and their build?

Thanks for the replies! I think alot of it is to with my weight as well, I'm 8st and as my friend says when my mare does thunder off on a hack I haven't got the weight on her to push back on her (if that makes sense). On the plus side she does have a broad chest that is useful for clinging onto...

Do you feel more comfortable on certain breeds and their build?

I love my loan 16.2 hh ID to bits but if there is one thing I would change about her is her build! I had a bad riding accident a few years ago and I always use to ride very petite Arabs and TB. But since the accident I wanted a horse that is very calm and a real confidence giver. MY ID is...

    Horses as Therapy

Definately! My mare I feel does sense when I'm not feeling right and becomes quite affectionate (she isn't a particulary affectinate horse the rest of the time lol). She'll often hang her head over my shoulder, blowing and nuzzling when I've had a bad day. I'm sure they do pick up on our emotions!

    How heavy is too heavy?

Like other has said depends upon the build of the horse. My horse is 16.1hh but is quite fine boned for an ID. I've let someone who was 14 stone have a go on her and I could she my mare struggled slightly. But I've seen chunkier ID's carrying alot more and they seemed ok.

How important do you think an outline is?

In the school I always aim for an outline and then let her cool with a long rein. My mare goes much better in the school when in an outline as she's more balanaced, otherwise she does a good giraffe pose and belts about in canter. On a hack I let her do her what she wants. Only time I ask her...
