I am a vet in a mixed practice. We charge around 35 pounds for a consultation for both small animals and equine. Appointment slots in the small animal hospital are 15minutes so I will see 4 animals in an hour. We charge a 35 pound visit fee to go out to a horse. On days when I am on the equine...
Whoops! Afraid of her mouth. She also still had a very 'polo' high head carriage. Does your pony accept a contact well? Tmj problems are fairly rare but if you are concerned speak to your vet. The best way to diagnose usually involves a ct scan as it is a difficult area to image.
I have an ex polo pony who is always very very tense in her poll (I'm also a vet :)).
A lot of it with mine stems from being very tense in her jaw due to being afraid of her m
As it happens my other half is a botanist and this is something we have discussed a lot. So far the research isn't pointing that way - more towards environmental factors increasing the concentration of the toxin
I'm sure that there were a few early cases that were misdiagnosed as colic but on the whole the symptoms are quite different from a veterinary point of view. The muscle breakdown causes myoglobinuria which results in urine that is the colour of coke which is the telltale sign.
There is plenty...
I totally agree with this!!! Haven't posted much for a while but I used to put lots of pics of me on my 14.3hh very lightweight thoroughbred mare on here. No one EVER suggested I was too heavy but I actually weighed between 12 and 12 1/2 stone!!! We hunted, jumped etc and she never ever had a...
The antibodies detected are specific to strangles so the positive test means that the horse has either been exposed to strangles in the not so distant past, has a current infection or has a latent infection (ie is a carrier and could pass it on to other horses).
If it is the former, waiting a...
My mum has just got her first horse at the age of 64 after helping with mine for many years and she is nowhere near as experienced as you. I also am the proud owner of a one eyed mare who hacks, hunts, and jumps with no problems at all (and cost me nothing!!)
I think you are in a great...
Eruption of adult teeth is usually a very precise indicator of age. The last incisors come out around 4 years old, there is a bit of leeway but usually only a few months either side. The second incisors come up at 3 and a half ish so horse probably is about four :)
Thanks kalli. This is by far the most awkward phase he has gone through so I am finding it difficult to imagine the finished product! I do love him though, he's a real sweetie x
He is DEFINITELY mischevious :D He has always been brave which sometimes gets him into trouble but he's never nasty. When he was a day old we were leading his mum and instead of following he ran into my neighbours garden chasing the chickens!!! Poor Zoom was beside herself! :D
For anyone who remembers Zoom the super one-eyed ex-polo pony i thought I'd put up some pics of her little colt Percy. He is going through a bit of an awkward yearling phase at the moment in the looks department but he is still as sweet and gentle to handle as ever!!

I have met lots of Monty horses including my own.
Other names I seem to always meet are:
Sam
Ted
Tilly
Milly
Lady
Paddy
Sally
Lucy
Merlin
Jester
I have never met another Zoom though!! :D
Zoomy was actually featured in a H&H article about horses that cost £1 and ended up being amazing. I was really chuffed to be picked for the story, we were alongside horses like Mr President!! :D
Zoom was a pololpony and only has one eye so isn't worth anything. She's not at the level of a...
