Personally, I like sand. Let’s urine through, easy to pick poo out without losing all the bedding. You do not want horses eating from sand, so no hay in there. In the winter, nice to add some straw to add some warmth for horses lying down.
I have just noticed this on one of mine, does anyone have any information on why a vertical ridge like this would form?
I don’t think it was there before, seemingly just showed up and I’m curious if anyone has an explanation as to why.
Yes, I’ve done this. Repurposed human clippers to train the baby horse how to be clipped (quieter and smaller). Worked great at a fraction of the cost! I do put the guards on so I don’t accidentally take too much off!
Agreed. I also prefer them barefoot to keep the legs sound. Also provides better traction on roads.
I was listening to a podcast years ago where Buck Davidson said that his horses don’t “earn” their shoes until they are competing at least preliminary (US). I’m sure it depends on regional soil...
Natural vitamin E is much, much better absorbed than artificial. In all my costing analysis comparing price per IU, I find that human vitamin E is the cheapest. Just by the gel caps from the pharmacy, hopefully on sale, and sprinkle on the food. They will eat it with no issue...
Yes, love whole flax seeds (Linseeds). I use them for the healthy omegas and to help keep condition. Easy to increase or decrease as required, if one is starting to look a bit thin a bit more flax can help keep weight on. As we enter into winter (Ontario, Canada), I up them to a full mug per day...
Thanks FinnishLapphund. The North American trailers all tend to be giant and designed to be pulled only by a tractor/gator.
I was hoping for something smaller like the Kellfri, allowing at least the empty trailer to be wheeled in by hand. If we overload it and need the tractor to pull it out -...
Hi friends,
Just wondering how you manage arena grooming/harrowing and moving jump poles around. Do you have a pole caddy or trailer that can help make this tedious job a bit easier?

I came across this but can’t seem to find anything similar in...
Two whippets, not raised with cats. Very quickly learned that barn cats have claws and not to chase.
Also quickly learned that relatives cats when we visited rule the roost. Couldn’t get down the stairs because (in typical cat fashion) blocked them by sitting there. LOL
Friends, very exciting news here on this side of the pond. Moving the ponies home for the first time - thrilled! - but also the responsibilities and choices of at home livery.
Around here (Ontario, Canada), almost everyone uses quick pick small flake shavings. While pretty and relatively...
REviving this thread from 2017 in the hopes someone may have found a solution. I am dealing with largely the same situation, a talented mare who is so stiff and laid back as to be almost horizontal. She’s strange thiugh, as she starts off stiff and actually works out of it with proper work. Her...
Yes, definitely. Show her as in exposure to things, not enter competitions.
We are very grateful for the wonderful hacking around. A local hunt is quite close and maintains an extensive array of trails. I also have an older horse who is confident and experienced, so she has a good pony pal to...
What is your secret sauce in the approach?
I've got myself a new baby (coming 4) and I'm excited to (almost) get started on her training. She had about 60 days of training last year (August/September) in preparation for her breed inspections. She was then turned out to grow up, get fuzzy and...
Struggling with shivers with my gelding. Have found some success with TCM bodysore, acupuncture and massage therapy. The inside thigh muscle of his back legs still feels very tight and stiff.
Has anyone tried CBD with any modicum of success? He is so lovely, really the sweetest, and I just want...
