Has anyone experienced E. coli in horses?!?

I have a 6 year old cob gelding. He is seriously lazy!! I want to fitten him up and try some low level working hunter with him where would you start?

I don't mean to be crude but what underwear do people wear when riding?? I want to be comfortable in the heat and not feel like I'm getting a wedgy when I ride!! Any advice peeps??

What are people's views on the traditional breaking bit with the keys? With new information and developments in Bit manufacturing is all that metal still the best option for your young horses mouth??
