Advice needed - any experience of joint fusion?

Hi All, Briefly, my 7 year old cob has been diagnosed with arthritis in the pastern joint. A cortisone injection has had little effect. Vet now says the choices seem to be surgical joint fusion or field ornament. Has anybody any experience of joint fusion or any advice, please?

    Does anyone's horse not buck/bronco??

My sadly late lamented Ollie never did with me in 18 years, although the person I bought him from said he bucked out hunting, but I don't hunt so I never found out.

How to entertain horse on box rest

Hi everyone. My cob is on box rest with a sprained fetlock. He is getting really fed up now and I wonder if anyone can suggest anything to entertain him. I don't want to give him toys that will encourage him to move around on his leg. His stable is in a position where he can see all the comings...

KitKat, Have looked at the ad - not too happy about the "can be keen in open spaces" bit.

people say horses aren't selling, but I can't find one!

Can anybody suggest where to look for a really quiet hack for an older not particularly confident rider? Needs to be a gelding around 15 hands, hack alone or in company, no bucking rearing etc. doesn't need to jump and doesn't matter what it looks like and an older horse would be acceptable...

    RIP Ollie

Ollie is gone. He took ill in the early hours of Wednesday and died in the early hours of Thursday. He was 25 but in pretty good shape until then. I had had him for 17 years. My little cob loved him too.

Does your horse Neigh to you?

I used to have Ollie at livery and never heard a sound from him. When I moved him to DIY he started to greet me as soon as I came into the yard. Mind you I think this is probably a case of being pleased to see the person who feeds him!

Is it moral to sell on old/elderly horses?

I think we owe it to them to make sure they are properly looked after in their old age. Ollie is 25 and been with me for 17 years so I would not consider parting with him. If for some reason it was impossible to keep him I would have to think very hard about what was in his best interests. The...

Lame horse - opinions on cause?

The comment about cob problems is interesting. Yes, he is insured.

Lame horse - opinions on cause?

The vet did use hoof testers, walk and trot in a straightline, and flexion tests but didn't lunge.

Lame horse - opinions on cause?

My 5 year old cob has been lame in the right hind for three weeks. There is no obvious heat or swelling. He comes out lame in the morning and it wears off a bit as he moves around. I had the vet who said "don't know". If anything it seems to be getting worse not better. Any opinions on cause and...

my cob needs a new saddle...

He's aged 5, growing and changing shape, has changed massively in the last 6 months, typical Irish cob type. I really prefer leather saddles but wonder if a synthetic with a changeable gullet is the more sensible choice. Otherwise was thinking maybe a secondhand leather - which makes and models...
