I had to abandon my usual morning ride due to the wind today. I never ride in the wind as my gelding just loses his mind! He grows about a hand in height, eyes bugging out and will literally throw himself around the school .... Not safe.
If you stop and just experience the sound the wind...
100% agree with having him checked by the chiropractor ... If all is okay then you need to get him moving forward. I understand this may be an uphill struggle if his owner is continuing to ride him in western pleasure. What are you planning to do with him as you may end up working completely...
Personally I would never have anything but leather. Will last a lifetime if good quality and well cared for, I've always found it more comfortable and easier to fit to the horse and generally looks smarter too.
I have a 7 year old warmblood gelding who I have brought on very slowly and will only be starting to compete "seriously" this year. He also has a lot of talent and very good bloodlines but I was very aware of the damage that can be done with pushing them too fast too soon particularly with his...
I think the sniffles only "rule" is rubbish (in my opinion only ;)) every horse is an individual and we shouldn't have blanket rules for them all. I ride my gelding between a French link sweet iron snaffle and a Pelham with the same mouthpiece when I want to do some fine tuning. You have to do...
I am guilty of having a horse with this kind of mane
My excuse is that he passionately hates having his mane pulled and this is my only option to prevent him ending up looking like a wild pony .....
In a previous life I had a job re schooling ex-racehorses and backing and bringing on hooligans. I was a bit of loon back then and would literally get on anything so naturally all the challenging rides were thrown my way. I never rode anything sensible, that was all part of the fun for me. I...
This probably isn't very helpful but .... Nothing substitutes good training and instilling some respect. Sounds like your horse thinks he knows best, I would suggest really stepping up your in-hand work and being super firm but fair with him.
TBH I don't rate these controller halters ...
I have this awesome weird rubber mitt thing that's shaped differently to the standard mitts and works about a million times better. It's great for shedding, mud, pee stains etc and it's one of the few brushes my sensitive, wimp of a horse will tolerate. I think I got for like £1 years ago at...
You can do it, but you need to be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. This is what I did. Started out just mucking out stalls and ended up getting the opportunity to ride some fantastic horses on the A circuit but it took a lot of dedication and hard work. I worked 7 days a week...
Ah, I get you! Well what about getting someone to film your lesson, so you can watch it back and see what you are doing and replicate it? That way you could also have the chance to hear your instructors advice again as it can be so difficult to remember exactly what you've been told when you're...
I used to care for a stallion that could never be trusted around dogs. We would attack them, no questions asked wether they were threatening or not. He seriously injured a jack Russell belonging to the brother of the YO, very lucky the dog was not killed. The stallion stomped on him with a front...
