Awful story. My friend and her pony was also attacked by 2 Bernese dogs - she was able to let her horse run. It took about half a mile before the oldest dog got tired and gave up. The second dog stopped as well. My own horse does not like dogs. If they come in his field, they exit either...
Definitely check for pain. I had one that started to do this when his hocks began to get arthritic. I realised (eventually!) that he was hurdling the fences rather than get to the correct takeoff point and push off with his hocks
Housing for me. It swallowed up all the little livery yards down my lane. I counted 115 horses around the village in the 90s, now we are down to the last 5. All the fields are gone and the same applies to all the other villages on the West sussex coast Also retirement of the old horsey...
Just a slightly off the wall suggestion. If his paddock is close to the barn, are there any electrical cables that run under the ground? Horses are ultra sensitive to any electrical current from a faulty cable.
Love this post and its good answers. This is where I lose patience with showing. I like the OP's bridle and I think it compliments the head by not having it covered in bondage leather, but I also realise that tastes change over time. I noticed at Hickstead this year all the quarter markings...
I never had a label for it. He twitched his head vertically almost constantly, and would bury his nose in a bucket of water and scissor kick when he was bad, so I believe he had TNS, but I also believe that the nerve was fired by some impingement in his body. The vets weren't particularly...
I had a headshaker. I bought him as a four year old 14hh pony, he started headshaking at 5, was diagnosed with arthritis at C6/C7 at 6, and was never completely sound to the left on a 10 m circle on concrete, so I was highly suspicious of left fore too. I believe that the neck and foreleg...
Hiya, yes I used Sassy Mare and Max Gut Health. Guts and Ovaries, one affects the other. Check for tapeworm - they congregate around the caecum. Check her back for tightness particularly lumbar spine, SI joint Any trouble there will affect the organs underneath including ovaries and caecum...
I had a Motorcyclist stop by the fence wanting to photograph the horses. The look of horror on their faces when he took his own head off (aka helmet) was classic. All he saw was their tails disappearing over the horizon.
I also suggest wetting the nose net - catches more pollen - at least I like to think so. You can experiment with an old pair of tights to see if a net would make a difference. I had a headshaker who was not seasonal. Turns out at age 6 he had arthritic changes in C6 and C7. In his teens he...
I really sympathise because I'm going through this too. And I had the vets 'is she just lazy' bit. Mine is 6 and just been diagnosed with arthritis in the lumbars. She was injected two weeks ago, is moving a little better, but her back still looks awful, spine prominent. Like you we've barely...
I've never used regumate and I don't know the answer. But I saw on FB, that someone was using an oil dispenser for the dosage which made it much easier. Don't know if that helps you?
Water buckets. My ex trotter hates you carrying them anywhere near him - flat ears, slitty eyes, the works Heaven help you if you have to carry a water bucket into his stable with him in it. He flounces about in a complete huff. Ive had him since he was 4 (he's now 19) and despite my best...
Short answer is No, I've never had him scoped, but his symptoms improve with Acid Ease. This time the Acid Ease improved him about 50%, so I suspected hind gut ulcers because he had a high tapeworm count this year (unusually), and tapeworms cause damage around the caecum, so he's been on Gut...
I spent the first 3 months saying No! to mine, then he was brilliant, such good fun. My lasting memory was him prancing round the field with my coat held firmly in his teeth. If a horse could laugh...
