Forgot to update! Glad I waited overnight to take Pia to the vet as the swelling went down and he was able to more fully examine her. No breaks! Luckily the ground was completely muddy so her foot must have sunk in rather than snapped. Vet gave me some anti-inflammatories and pain meds to take...
mattydog, oh no! I'm sorry for your pup. :( Yes, she's putting weight on it (both walking and running), but it's getting more and more swollen. I'll take her in first thing in the morning (and honestly I'll be a little surprised if nothing's broken -- huge horse hoof on dainty dog paw -- not good).
Poor puppy! She got underfoot (literally) and learned a hard lesson. Her foot is scraped in two places and is now fairly swollen. I'm wondering if I should take her in to the vet tomorrow or wait and see if it heals. What are the warning signs to look out for? If she's still drinking and eating...
Hi all,
My native mare's been unrugged her entire life and has always been happy through the winter. This year, though, we don't have a field shelter and she's going to be ridden occasionally, so I thought I'd put a rug on her for the wettest/coldest days and the night before if she'll be...
Thanks everyone! I'm happy to read all of your responses, because turning her out and just loving on her and doing some groundwork is what I really want to be doing, but I was getting pressure at the yard to keep her education going while I'm unable to ride. At least I know she's not going to...
Well. Not pregnant *with* a green horse.
I just found out I'm about five weeks pregnant. A few months ago, after a couple of years out of horses, I bought a three year old with a couple months' backing. She's lovely... but she's three, spooky, and not at all "trustworthy", so it...
I agree that the most obvious benefit of BHS certification is the ability to locate experienced and appropriate instructors.
While I'm not young, I am from the states, where BHS qualifications are unheard of. :) Hence the curiosity about whether they're necessary and of proven benefit...
Ooh, this is a bit funny because I just emailed my old mare's new owner yesterday, asking for an update. :p
Back when I had her, I managed to do some super-sleuthing to find her original breeders, which was no small feat given that she had no papers, only a small brand. I got those papers in...
Thanks Fosterdown, that helps a lot!
I don't actually have any horses at the moment, just checking possible routes. I'd prefer to buy a house with the land, but obviously it's very expensive, so until the right property comes along I'm leaning toward just getting a yard and possibly renting...
Just some general logistics questions...
I managed a small livery barn for a couple of years and while I did not live there, the yard owner's home was on-site and she would check the horses in the evening and in the morning before she left for work. I didn't worry about someone not being...
Sorry, are you referring to me? I was asking whether most people have to pay £6000 for three terms of coursework to pass their exams, or whether they get by with the knowledge they gain from their instructor and studying the syllabus.
I like to think I won't need to get another degree before...
Thanks, guys!
For those of you who have taken the exams, did you take any proper courses in preparation or did you just hit the books? I really don't have the time to enrol in a course, so I'm hoping I can get by with just the books and my knowledge...
This. Prices change with the market, and some people get in when the rent was cheaper. Usually barns don't raise the price for current boarders if they decide to start charging more.
