    House and yard insurance

What is the yard and land insured for - flooding ? fire? an arena can't really burn down - or get stolen Lots of old buildings aren't really covered as much as you might think because the electrics aren't pat tested and you can't find the receipt for the roof ! Insurers wiggle out of...

    Fence posts

It saves a lot of time resetting distances if the poles are a little forgiving to the odd tap and for babies if they totally mess it up and stand on them they don't end up tripping over themselves.

    Fence posts

I use old square ones too that came out of an old fence so normal fence heigh (not long) on the ground for trot poles etc. - in hand work and practicing accuracy As square they don't roll when tapped so more forgiving with a youngster who's just learning

At my wits end with saddles! Hit me with your saddles for those flat backed wider horses!

I've had a nightmare - and mine is recently broken so I'm not spending £2k on a saddle he'll outgrow in 6 months He's also only 14hh so 16.5 inch and massive shoulders My list from a couple of different saddlers was those below. I had 2 give up on me and wish me luck. A third managed to find a...

    Seller refused 5 stage vetting…

A 5 stage for a young horse isn't endurance - if you and the seller are both there you could agree to stop if he starts to struggle with any aspect. If there is no room for compromise / a middle ground with some aspects of 5 stage done / some not done and if the horse has been happily in work...

    Seller refused 5 stage vetting…

I think a sensible vet could accommodate the age of the horse in a 5 stage. If there are certain bits the seller doesn't want the horse to do (and the vet agrees they are age related) then perhaps a 4.5 stage vetting. If you are looking for insurance you will need a vets cert. Perhaps use...

    Moulting and grass growing!!

Certainly green poos here in Yorkshire. While it's grim rain and mist constantly - it is mild 6-8 degrees. Anything over 5-6 degrees and the grass will grow

    Weather proofing

A truly horrible day here (again!) and you can see how they use it. It used to be stables along the back in a U shape around the internal yard - gate over the front and back stables gone and it's quite a big space You can see the hole cut in the back on the left that leads to the field...

    Weather proofing

2 winters ago I took a bold step - stripped out 4 internal stables and cut a big hole in the back of my American barn and had a professional track put in to the winter field behind the barn - all properly fenced. It wasn't cheap and I've fewer stables now but ...... it's been life changing...

Survey request - horse owner decisions

If only there was a clear line between field sound and not or serviceably sound or not. Sadly over the years I've had several and they really varied over the seasons. One went down hill with hard ground in the summer but was very happy when it was muddy (lots of people commenting that "he...

Insurance Question - How does it really work?

I think most of us here are in the UK so the rules might not apply. It is probably best to speak to a local French broker and see what they can find for you that suits the cover you are looking for in your geography. Brokers have a good overview of what is available and what is best priced

    Youngsters are ridiculous

Chasing birds is a great game, despite being spooked by pigeons when riding they are fair game out. They often chase a pheasant who run along then eventually get into flight and hop the wall. Then they all stare longingly at the creature who has magic'ed themselves into the long grass field -...

    WWYD

It is a child or an adult? - any one around them that they might listen to that you could speak to? Who has spoken to them about the soundness / saddle / lack of a day off - were you there and do you know how clearly it was put to them. Some people believe they have "said something" while...

    Disposing of hay

ahh - those mean bad guys who sneak in at the dead of night and snip one string on a heston bale then leave again - they are such a pain !!

    Disposing of hay

I'd try your local allotment if there is nowhere at home to use is as mulch / compost. I thought you had 3 round bales, which might have been a bit more tricky Knowing my luck I'd be done for fly tipping if it was left on verges.
