    Keeping horses on agricultural land

You could in theory pop the donkeys on livery for a couple of weeks - maybe when you planned a holiday, then they aren't committed to be there all the time??

    Keeping horses on agricultural land

If it has been used for horses at any point in the past it may help to get the sellers to share any evidence they have of that - copy photos or hay delivery receipts or something. Then if (big and unlikely IF) someone with nothing better to do made a fuss you have evidence of past use. Ours...

What would you expect from a horse trainer?

I wouldn't be put off if someone wanted to do all the training 'hacking' rather than in the school at all. All the things you mention about stopping, changing speed within and between gaits, flexion, leg yeilding in and out of parked cars can all be very effectively schooled on a hack, without...

    Agricultural Tenancy Land

We looked at one in Yorkshire that had lovely land with two tenancies - one could maybe be ended in 12 months the other had to wait until the death of the current tenants son (who was about 40 y/o). You couldn't get to the the fields on the more normal tenancy without going through these ones...

    Rude Drivers Whilst Hacking

We have operation Snap in Yorkshire and I've had a good few police fines for people stopping to shout at me on the road. The difference in behaviour when they see a hat cam is really marked - I put mine on even when it is out of charge as I now consider just it physically being there to be a...

    House and yard insurance

Wow for 80 square foot of land I couldn't use and would fence off I think I'd sell the tiny parcel of land to a neighbour rather than pay £3k pa just for liability insurance.

    Remounting whilst out hacking

There is a lovely old video at a clinic with a chestnut mare that headbuts the trainer repeatedly while trying to work it out. I remember that one as nice horsemanship. Can't remember who tho so not super helpful - sorry I would just practice at home with anything and anywhere you can find...

    House and yard insurance

What is the yard and land insured for - flooding ? fire? an arena can't really burn down - or get stolen Lots of old buildings aren't really covered as much as you might think because the electrics aren't pat tested and you can't find the receipt for the roof ! Insurers wiggle out of...

    Fence posts

It saves a lot of time resetting distances if the poles are a little forgiving to the odd tap and for babies if they totally mess it up and stand on them they don't end up tripping over themselves.

    Fence posts

I use old square ones too that came out of an old fence so normal fence heigh (not long) on the ground for trot poles etc. - in hand work and practicing accuracy As square they don't roll when tapped so more forgiving with a youngster who's just learning

At my wits end with saddles! Hit me with your saddles for those flat backed wider horses!

I've had a nightmare - and mine is recently broken so I'm not spending £2k on a saddle he'll outgrow in 6 months He's also only 14hh so 16.5 inch and massive shoulders My list from a couple of different saddlers was those below. I had 2 give up on me and wish me luck. A third managed to find a...

    Seller refused 5 stage vetting…

A 5 stage for a young horse isn't endurance - if you and the seller are both there you could agree to stop if he starts to struggle with any aspect. If there is no room for compromise / a middle ground with some aspects of 5 stage done / some not done and if the horse has been happily in work...

    Seller refused 5 stage vetting…

I think a sensible vet could accommodate the age of the horse in a 5 stage. If there are certain bits the seller doesn't want the horse to do (and the vet agrees they are age related) then perhaps a 4.5 stage vetting. If you are looking for insurance you will need a vets cert. Perhaps use...

    Moulting and grass growing!!

Certainly green poos here in Yorkshire. While it's grim rain and mist constantly - it is mild 6-8 degrees. Anything over 5-6 degrees and the grass will grow

    Weather proofing

A truly horrible day here (again!) and you can see how they use it. It used to be stables along the back in a U shape around the internal yard - gate over the front and back stables gone and it's quite a big space You can see the hole cut in the back on the left that leads to the field...
