I do that way more often than use liners. I’ll Pop a 50/100g over top of a daytime turnout at night.

Same here. We gathered up 2nd hand 100g Duo's from Ebay etc, with a random selection of liners, and never have any leaks on 3 horses...

If he is incredibly stiff then I would say that he is not sound in general. Sounds like pain and compensation. I'd avoid.
