Just cost me £280 to have a 7 month colt done standing. Was given anti biotics as a precaution as I seem to be unlucky! Still on mum, apart from swelling it did,nt affect him at all and he was hooling around field hours later. One week of swelling, but again he was,nt bothered. Glad it,s over...
Omg fox hunter I,d call that serious! Amazing what they can recover from. Glad it was only an abscess, they can be quite scary as horse acts like leg is broken!
Some horses don,t like to pee when you,re on them. Every time he does pee, whistle while he,s doing it, then tell him he,s a good boy! Even when I,m poo picking if one of the horses has a pee while I,m passing I whistle, even the babies. Then when you,re riding and he feels like he needs a pee...
My vet has advised me to gelding my colt while he,s still on mum as they recover better. Not in a hurry to wean as mum suffered a rupture so won,t be worked again. Going to leave him with her as long as poss, I.e she loses condition( won,t happen as she,s a good doer) or he becomes too cocky...
ok, i,ve managed to upload 3 photos in my photo album but no idea how to put them on this thread. mum and baby doing really well, he,s a feisty young man.
Unfortunately unlikely that shewill repair, muscles holding up stomach are ripped. Best case is that she dozen,t get further complications and can enjoy life as a field ornament. She,s beinga great mum and little one is getting milk from one teat but not managed other one yet, hoping he will as...
Just to say that lily successfully gave birth to a bay colt this morning, no complications, ended up a pretty easy birth. Having few problems feeding as udders deformed during injury but he,s managed to latch on to one after 8 hours. Bottle fed colostrum earlier. Feisty little chap, so glad they...
Lily who has the rupture is doing very well but her udder is enlarged and deformed and now starting to crack. Vet advised cream but it hurts her if I touch it. I was wondering if there was something safe I could spray on? I,m also worried that she won,t produce milk, and if all goes well and...
I put another mare in with my mare and foal when foal was about 2 months old. The mother was the dominant mare though. They took turns watching over foal and the second mare adored it also. I was able to wean foal off with the other mare with hardly any fuss at all. Not sure if dominant mare...
Just had lily scanned, foal is alive and it,s not twins. After taking some advice vet has decided to leave mare alone and hope she goes into labour on own, which is when he,ll come out to assist. So long as she stays perky and dosen,t go down hill he thinks this is safer than inducing. She,s...
That must have been terrifying. So glad they are fighting back, and fingers crossed for them both. Gives me hope that my mare will survive her rupture and have a healthy foal.
Tried finding 24 hour vet care but unfortunately I,m way down Cornwall at lands end, and she would,nt be able to travel too far. On a positive note lily is still bright and managing to wander around a bit and still very keen for her food. She,s very relaxed as she has her friends close by so her...
Unfortunately the edema,s I posted about now turn out to be the above. My mare is an Anglo, ten years and maiden so vet dozen,t know how this has happened to her. He has,nt given a good prognosis and if she gets worse we,ll have to put her and foal to sleep. She,s 308 days and is uncomfy but...
