    Children on yards

My girls are 3 & 5 and even though they love horses I rarely bring them to the yard with me - it just isn't a safe environment for them to be in even with constant supervision. The last time they came up I actually left them watching Frozen on an iPad in the tack room- it gave me 30mins to...

    Canker experiences :(

    Canker experiences :(

My OTT gelding has been diagnosed with Canker (one heel only so far) and we are looking into debridging at the local equine hospital very soon. Has anyone experienced Canker first hand? How did you treat and what was the recovery period like? We are based in OZ and recently experienced severe...

First competition for ex-racehorse (feeling nervous!)

Thank you all for replying. I’ll be keeping everything crossed for a sane test :)

First competition for ex-racehorse (feeling nervous!)

I have decided to take the plunge & enter a local dressage competition with my new OTT. He finished racing in May, and we started his re-training (with the help of a professional) in July. Although he is doing well, the bar is set considerably lower from any other horses I have owned e.g. we...

Full livery, full time mum, and a job

Its absolutely doable. I work full time and have 2 kids (4 & 2.5), my horse is currently on part livery and lives out 24/7 (I am based in Sydney). I only ride 3 times a week at most, granted its not particularly leisurely BUT I wouldn't change it for the world. You just have to be good with time...

    Missold a horse advice please

This is a tough situation! Sometimes the threat of legal action is enough to make a private seller change their tune, so that would be my first plan of action. I presume (based off what you've said) you aren't keen to spend more money with the vet and potentially treat the suspected ulcers, in...

    Returning a lame loan horse

I don't think your plan was unreasonable if the mare is meant to be unfit. Yes you take things slowly, but walking with a couple of minutes easy trot shouldn't result in her being 'hopping' lame. I'd go with your gut on this one. If this was your horse then that is a different story, but don't...

How to sell the seemingly unsellable horse....

What do you mean by "wrong type/age/temperament"? It's true some of the quirkier horses take longer to sell, but unless your horse is downright dangerous or crippled then I wouldn't write them off completely. You should definitely expand the advertising platforms- I can't say advise which ones...

    Rescue experiences

A little late to the party but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents! We took on a rescue horse end of last year, he was a starvation case from the drought (I'm in Oz). I can say hands down he has been the most expensive horse I have EVER owned in my life (even after just 6 months!!). Despite him...

    Rescue horse dilemma

100% agree. His chiro also said the same as you have. Something else to closely monitor.

    Rescue horse dilemma

Bit of an update: I admit I am feeling a little stupid for writing him off like I did. The farrier shod him (fronts only) and he trotted up sound the following day! The farrier mentioned he has bad feet so we will have to keep a careful watch on them going forward. For now its a huge relief...

    Rescue horse dilemma

Yes that is correct, we are based in NSW and about to hit middle of our Winter. I have the farrier out today and will see what he says about that state of his feet. I would be willing to cover the cost of Xrays but not an MRI (unless we win the lottery!). That's assuming he stays unsound...

    Rescue horse dilemma

If that is the case I think I would retire him back to his previous yard as I don't need all our current facilities, this way I could pay for his keep until the end of the year. After all he has suffered I would never pass him on as a companion horse so would most likely PTS.

    Rescue horse dilemma

Sorry in advance for my ramblings! I have been mulling this over NON-STOP and just want somebody else's feedback before I go crazy! o_O At the end of last year I helped rescue a 17hh OTT from awful conditions, he was literally skin and bones and the vet who examined him said he had a couple of...
