Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Hi Emma, Yes I agree - i feel like i need training myself to show my how to hold the rope, where to place myself so that I can brace against him etc. I guess my main concern is that I will pay a trainer to come out to me and he will be on his best behaviour lol. I just think it's going to be...

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Hi Emma, Thanks so much for replying to my post. I'm normally a lurker as well :-) Everything you said sounds exactly like what I'm going through now - there is no reason that I can see and he has been perfect for 4 months and then, Bam, he starts again. It's to the point where I don't know how...

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Yes i agree - it's all in the timing and unfortunately I don't really have any experience with that. I'm looking for a trainer in my area as I clearly need some help! x

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Thank you for your comment, I do want to say that I did 2 solid months of groundwork and no riding with him last year - we followed the Warwick Schiller plan. It helped to some degree but as I said this is an intermittent problem and not something he does all the time. I also do ground work with...

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Hi, thanks for this - I did buy one of those to try out and picked it up out of the field after 5 minutes minus the chain that he had broken tanking off in it. I really wish that something like that would work for me but it seems that he has zero respect for any pressure on his head and will...

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Thanks - yes I was going to try a chain as well. He backs up, yields hind and fore quarters etc all perfectly once on the yard but it all goes out of the window on the way in when he decides to bugger off unfortunately.

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Thanks for this - I will have a look at what that is as I've not heard of that before! Excuse my ignorance but I've only had him for a year and a half and he is my first horse xx

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

I Hi, I did think about trying this actually but I've found that he will just ignore food once in this frame of mind which blows my mind as he is so food driven usually. I think I will investigate further into the clicker training though and give it a go x

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Thanks for the reply, tried the chiffney and that didn't stop him but I think my next attempt will be a bridle and a longer rope although I don't really hold out much hope at this point :-(

Tips on handling horse that tanks off in-hand

Hi All, I'm after some practical advice on how to handle my horse when I'm leading him to the yard from his field. This is at least a 5 minute walk away through 2 gates and across a quiet road. What I really need at this point is some step by step details on how to use a longer rope to stop my...
