I have been using sugar beet for years (unmolassed speedibeet) and had a look on the British Horse Feeds facebook page (makers of Speedi-Beet) - this is what they said about the article:
Whilst the article was very instructive and offered good practical solutions in terms of management, it...
I use Verm-X on my elderly welsh pony with cushings. Has worked wonders and I would have hated to leave her un-wormed. I called the Verm-X people before starting her with Verm-X and they let me speak to their very lovely vet who was ever so helpful
Hmmm... Will wait to see with this. Vermex seems to be the only herbal wormer to be really successful at the moment. I use it and it bought down a high worm count on my mare to a now constant low count.
Not sure what other people use but I have good results with Verm-X and the best bit is the worm counts are free :-) I used to worry about using harsh chemicals on my horses and of course the concerns about resistance.
I can only think of three! have you got these?
Make sure the horse is warm but the stable must be well ventilated.
Change the water frequently, especially if the horse has nasal discharge.
Use seperate tools, grooming equipment and buckets etc if the horse has something contagious.
You could give him massages to keep him relaxed, if you don't have time there are massage systems that can do it for you they will also prevent stiffness and filled legs
It would be a cheaper and much safer option just to kept her in a field with no geldings rather than use regumate if she is fine for you to handle and ride. Regumate should make her cycles more regular but this would only be of real importance if you were breeding from her.
Hibiscrub will dry the skin out, this happened to one of my mares so I switched to an anti-bacterial wash with the correct pH balance. Once the mud fever clears up make sure you turn out in some protective leg wear to keep the legs clean and dry.
You could try swapping your sugar beet for a sugar beet feed with added alfalfa which is great for weight gain and condition. I feed Fibre-Beet to the older horses on the yard to keep the weight on them.
