    Grumpy TB when schooling

Sounds like we're singing from the same hymn sheet. My chaps leg yields out hacking are lovely , not so great in the school. All areas to work on. :)

    Grumpy TB when schooling

Thanks oldie48, yes I think you're right. Like I mentioned in my post, he's improved already so I'm sure his 'tantrums' are perhaps partly down to me asking more if him . He has a tendency of striking of in canter on the wrong leg, often favouring his more flexible right rein which I would...

    Grumpy TB when schooling

Hi All I need some advice about my 17 yo ex racer. He's been nothing but a hack for the past 10 years. I've been riding him for 6 years and when I moved yards last year I got access to a half decent school. Hacking he's great, forward even paces, canter lovely, and other than usual spooking...

Feeding choices for skinny silly tb! (Sorry probs 1 of many!)

I've spent the winter feeding up my 16.2 TB ex racer on nothing more complicated than soaked grass nuts, own brand conditioning cubes from my local merchant and corn oil. I started off with Baileys no 4 for a few weeks, but the cost soon mounted up, and when the weather was at its worse I gave...

Another Bedding Question - Best for a Poo Masher

I'm with mycocorocks, YO has Sec D mare who parties every night in her poo! I've mucked her out a few times when YO was away and she has her on wood pellets - really tough to muck out. Found it really heavy and hard to get the compacted stuff up! She's now tried her on Miscanthus grass -...

    shavings

I've tried all sort of bedding, shavings, chippings and traditional straw but last winter moved to a really good quality rape straw bedding - Caviera. Fab stuff, lovely and soft but absorbs well - great prices too from my local supplier. its all compressed like shavings bales but not as...

    Bits at intro level dressage

Thanks misstyc. As this is his first bit of competing in years, just wanted to see how he behaves with the plan that if it all goes to plan we will take the plunge and play with some dressage legal ones. Doesn't help that the test is next weekend so doesn't give us a lot of time to find...

    Bits at intro level dressage

Hi i am hoping to take my 16 yo tb ex racer for his first dressage test soon, just at intro level to see what he makes of it all. He is hacked out and schooled in a French link dutch gag, which I know isn't dressage legal, but wondering if there's any relaxing of the rules even at intro level...

    Rainscald - ideas for treatment

A quick wash off with Hibiscrub has worked for my chap. He had a touch on his ears and on his flank at the begginning of winter which are all cleared up. Then spotted a little bit on his withers which I washed off last weekend, and already looking far better.

Muddy horse doesn't like face being groomed!

I use a small face brush (Mark Todd brand I think, or Slip Knot perhaps) bristles are much softer and the brush is smaller to easier to groom around eyes etc. My TB isn't keen on having his head brushed but loves a good rub so sometimes just use gloved hand to try and get the super sticky dried...

    Odd scabby lumps

My chap came up in small lumps on his rump in the summer, they didn't bother him at all so I gave him a hibi scrub then smothered them in antibacterial green gel which worked. A few days later the lumps were down and left with lots of little scabs which eventually fell off leaving several bald...

    Dangerous napping

Wow, you've got loads of advice here, all very valid and you'll need to work out what's best for you and your mare. The only thing I'll add is my chap used to be very nappy, we had limited circular rides and when a ride took us past a route home, boy would we have a fight. spinning, walking...

    Domosedan and clipping

So, used Domosedan this weekend for clipping. My chap is a 16 yo 16.2 TB - just for reference. He's fine about stuff in the mouth so administering wasn't too much of an issue. Stuck my finger into the corner of his mouth first to check about the angle to make sure it went under his tongue, so...

    Domosedan and clipping

I don't think I'll have too much issue getting it under his tongue, but like the idea of rubbing it into gums, with gloves on of course!

    Feeding for weight gain

Hi Nikkimariet Sorry, off on a bit of a tangent - impressed with a barefoot TB. Are you simply blessed or have you a secret to great feet? I use Kevin Bacon, and got to say, its very good - is there something else I should know? ;)
