When things worked out so well I felt really happy being able to come back and say that things are going well! I'm absolutely loving my loan horse and he's such a joy 🤗
Thank you so much especially for the extra advice and support you gave me, Mrs Jingle. You were willing to go to great...
It's been nearly exactly a month so in case anyone sees this late or was curious about the current goings-on of my loaning saga 😆
I'm getting on so, so well with this horse. We just click so well even after just a month! Now that he's in work a few times a week he's settled down a lot, he's so...
Thank you for your concern and input! It's actually the best loan situation I've been able to find in my area 🙈 and there's basically no riding schools close enough to go regularly anymore unfortunately.
I've yet to actually try this horse out on a hack, barring me testing him on the lane and...
I'll ask the owner about it. Afaik she'd ride him in the same tack, he'd also have experience hacking out on his own on all the routes from what I'm aware. He's very fun in the arena and I think there's plenty we could work on so not hacking wouldn't be the end of the world but it would feel...
Yeah that's definitely possible. I just wanted to try him up/down the lane to get an idea what he'd be like leaving the yard/arena, his strength took me by surprise but next time I attempt it I'll be firmer with him.
Thank you. I think that might be a good idea, I might see if I can go hacking with the owner some weekend. I know it's practical to do a long haul hack to make it "boring" for him but I'd be nervous trying our first hack together as a long one 🙈
Thank you for such a detailed response! In the school he does seem to be relaxed enough, he's responsive if I ask him to turn, ears flicking to me etc,.
Definitely, I am going to work more on pace and transitions with him. Also halting. One of my biggest concerns would be that to get to all...
I might see if I can ask someone. Aside from trying (and failing) to get him to go down the lane I haven't tried hacking him at all, I don't know exactly what he's like other than that his owner has said "he wants to come home on the way back". He would definitely know the routes but hasn't had...
No he's definitely trying to go faster, as in trying to go from walk>trot, occasionally trot>canter but trot definitely seems to be his favourite gait. I've only cantered him once so far and he came down to trot alright, but it can be hard to get him from trot down to walk. And he speeds up, if...
Thanks for the suggestions! Since he's not my own horse I don't think I can switch his gear (plus I've never really used stronger bits on my own!), but the lunging and schooling is a good idea. He's been out of a regular work routine for a while.
Hiya! I posted a while ago about my loan horse who had very bad separation anxiety. The owner at the yard had another horse who I've started loaning. He's much more relaxed on his own, can be slightly pushy but easy to correct, and basically just not a massive headache to handle lol. He's very...
That's very possible as well. Watching me trying to handle the mare she really seemed sorry for me!
And yep, @Nari points out what I'm concerned about whenever I hear a horse described as "forward". The last time I tried a "forward confidence giver" he was just tearing around the arena without...
No I'm all for opinions on this, if something is changing here I want to do it the right way!
In my head I'm just so frustrated with the experience I'm currently having that it feels like any other alternative would be better (even if it's one that I know won't do my confidence any good if I...
